My husband and I loved this place. We came upon it accidentally and we were so happy we did. I got the Sauerbraten sandwich and it was excellent. The beef brisket was the most tender I have ever had. The roll was so soft. My...husband had the Pfannenkuchen. He never had crepes like that before. He absolutely loved it. We talked about it all day. Will definitely be back. It was a lovely atmosphere.More

The owners are always gracious, inviting and accommodating. I can only imagine the stress they feel putting out consistently delicious food day after day. Perhaps they deserve to have an off day from time to time. I cannot see how race comes into play for...some of the other reviewers, but the cooks, servers and staff are multiracial. Food-wise I would recommend the Gunk Haus burger—it is out of this world!! Expect to love anything you order there, as it's always on point. If you're a foody and FRESH ingredients are important to you, then the Gunk Haus is your place. I've got a friend who drives up from New Jersey to eat there. The atmosphere is romantic, cozy, old European with a home-like feel. A space where all patrons dine and drink together...Don't be surprised if you strike up a conversation with the neighboring table.More

After Christmas tree shopping we found this restaurant that blends tradition with the local area. The service was excellent and food was traditional.

Horrible customer service. Man at the front desk was rude and nasty when we tryed to get a table. Over heard him making racial slurs to other employees . Will never go to this place again .

The "host" (owner) pretended that he couldn't seat us, clearly was refusing service but couldn't be honest about the reason.

No lunch menu on Sundays. Wish we knew before we drove out. Pretzel app was cold and dry. Same bread on sandwichs made them dry as well.Potato salad was raw and overwhelmed by mustard. Server was pleasant.

We waited for a table in their garden which was quite pleasant. Then we ate on the deck with views of the Gunk Mountains. My friend has celiac, and they have gluten free options . She had the Brook Trout which was perfect. I had...the Jaeger schnitzel with spaezle which was almost as good as my Grandmother's (Nobody could beat her cooking). My other friend had the mussels. It is listed as an appetizer, but it was a very generous serving. For dessert we shared a passionfruit strudel. Delicious. I want to come back in the fall for the apple strudelMore

DISCLAIMER - IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE A 0 RATING, I WOULD. This experience was honestly pathetic. The owner was very pretentious and could not have been less personable. We came with our young son and my young niece and nephew and we were...jerked around about availability for seating and clearances - meanwhile the entire restaurant was empty. The owner was very standoffish about having a stroller outside, again mind you it was empty, but he huffed and puffed about it. HE MADE MY SISTER-IN-LAW CARRY HER 4 MONTH OLD IN A STROLLER DOWN THE STAIRS BECAUSE HE HAD HIS DOGS OUT ON THE RAMP. This owner could not be more tone deaf and sad. Napoleon complex doesn’t begin to describe this poor man. Go to Mountain Brauhaus instead. They appreciate and respect families, customers, and business. This place does not. Don't waste your time or money.More

We called to see if they could accommodate us. We are a party of 6 adults, 2 high chairs and a stroller. We were told they could, so we went. upon arrival we told them again,6 adults 2 high chairs and a stroller. The owner...takes us to be seated, what a terrible experience!!! He takes us to the table that is supposedly set up for us. He tells us we can not have the stroller, we explain the baby is three months old and can not sit in a chair and is sleeping. He then starts moving all the chairs and both high chairs around the table that has already been prepared for us. After this he then decides we can not sit here and precedes to put us at a table with the sun blasting on us. The two children in the high chairs are 1 and 2 and a half, they were never put down or left to roam around . We take them out to eat often and they are well behaved. We did have our dinner which we rushed through because by now we are uncomfortable and feel unwelcome. As we are leaving we are stopped from leaving the restaurant using the ramp with the stroller, the owner informs us he has his dogs there, they are vicious and do not like children. Therefore we need to carry the stroller down the steps. After all of this, my husband speaks to the owner and explains how dissatisfied we are and how rude he was. My husband explained if it is not a family restaurant he should have told us to start with. My husband informed him we would let our family and friends with children know they are not welcome there. His response was "that's ok". Guess local business isn't all that important to him!! Seems it is NOT a family friendly restaurant. I would advise all families to spend their family time any place other than there!!!More

After riding 30 miles from New Paltz up some pretty strenuous climbs, our party finally reached our lunch stop destination - the Gunk Haus. Knew we were high enough for some good views and the large outdoor seating area afforded both a lovely breeze and...view of the Gunks. Our waitress very quickly attended to us with a round of ice water and being ravenous from the ride, ordered shortly thereafter. I had the Haus Salad, which was generous and tasty! Enough to share with others in our party of 5 and still suffice for my own luncheon. My husband had the Gunk Wurst with fries - which were THE BEST homemade fries I have ever eaten!! I can't quite recall what the others in our party ordered, but I do know everyone was quite satisfied with the service, ambiance (inside and out) and the food. I highly recommend making a stop if you find yourself in the area!!More

I really wanted to like this place. On the positive side, the location and outside vista were very nice. The service was pleasant, polite and professional. Sadly, for me, the food just didn't hit the spot. I ordered jaegerschnitzel and when it arrived, the expected...mushroom gravy and hearty flavor of the dish just wasn't there. The minuscule amount of sauce was watery with no substance and the cutlet arrived in pieces; all very dry. The spaetzle appeared to be fried (!), was dry, and equally devoid of flavor. The side of red cabbage was tasty, but that is about it. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant for its food. It's saving grace is the outdoor vista and cold brews.More

We have been going here since they first opened, when it was good…it has steadily gone down the road of mediocrity and not good cooking…we ordered the salmon croquettes, lentil soup, stuffed cabbage, chicken schnitzel, and spaetzle….the croquettes were bland mush inside, the soup was...something I would have expected in a bad middle eastern restaurant…too much chili? Paprika?salt? It was not good tasting…the stuffed cabbage had a very BLAND filling, and to compensate, the cook over seasoned the sauce with so much curry, it was almost inedible…the spaetzle was clumpy and starchy..the chicken was fatty and over breaded….overall, just not what it used to be. Too bad, because the place is beautiful, but, the cooks are not trained, and recipes are mediocre…revamp and up your game, Dirk!More

My wife and I stopped for lunch at the Gunk Haus and enjoyed it. The staff was pleasant and accommodating. I enjoyed a Clown Shoes !PA with my Roast Pork Loin Sandwich - Braised Leeks, Gorgonzola, Spicy Brown Mustard on a Haus-Made Pretzel Roll. My...wife opted for the QUICHE of the day - Ham. We will definitely visit the Gunk Hause again for lunch or dinner.More

A nice pleasant restaurant. Staff and service was superb. We tried the chili special of the day as recommended by our server Taylor. Taylor was knowledgeable about the menu and the variety of beers. The stuffed mushrooms were good but not my taste. I recommend...the short ribs which fell off the bone and the chicken schnitzel over spaetzle. For dessert, yum chocolate fudge cake. I will go again, if you like German cuisine you will like it here.More
