My husband, son, daughter and I came to celebrate my husband's birthday. Our waiter was Ronnell who was excellent - helpful, polite and friendly :) . I had the Shepherd's Pie, my husband the blackened Ribeye special, my daughter the Lamb Stew and my son...the Duck. We all enjoyed our meals. The House Merlot was very good; drink-wise, the Espresso Martinis were "okay"; the Cappacino was very good. Dessert-wise the Chocolate cake was okay; and the Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee was good. Last time we came I had the shortrib dinner which was fantastic, my daughter had the fish trio and thought it was very good also; my husband had the Lamb Stew last time and enjoyed that a lot. My son said the duck was good and enjoyed it more than the Burger which is what he had last time (he did not like the Focacia roll). We also had the Hummus appetizer and liked the spicey Hummus but did not care for the sweet one; the House salad is good. This is an expensive restaurant but a go to for special occasions.More

My son married his fiancé earlier in the day. I (Mom of groom) and her parents went here. Loved the ambience of a very old house with several beautiful rooms. We had great dinners (I had roast chicken, 'Dad' had duck, Bride had the special...burger and her Mom and my son had Surf and Turf). We all loved our food and all of us ex the duck eater took some back to the lodge. We had terrific service. It's a beautiful place with alot of warmth and charm!More

I highly recommend Garvan’s for: 1) food: a knowledgable chef, variety of fine ingredients, it was hard to limit just one appetizer and just one entree - so many good options 2) service: our young waiter was very attentive but never intrusive, he seems to...appear at just the right moment 3) ambience & decor: elegant country rooms, fireplace for warmth and a touch of romance, very beautiful historic/period furnishing, subtle and tasteful 4) the man himself, Garvan! stopped by our table and charmed us for a few moments and inquired of our well being. 5) we’ll be back! Thank you Garvan’s!More

We had the best corn beef Ruben we have ever had and a wonderful flavorful shepherds pie. We stopped on our way to Mohonk Mt House for lunch and it was great. Amazing service and great food. Wonderful ambience.

Great food and service in a locally historic building. The clam chowder is a must have, as is the Reuben sandwich. This place is rated number 1 for a good reason: quality.

We happened upon this place by accident and were fantastically surprised! Everything was delightful from the amazing food to the outstanding service from all staff at every turn--including the attentive owner Garvan himself--to the comforting and historic atmosphere. Just when you thought service was dead...in the restaurant industry, you discover a place like this that is the full, immersive dining experience. This is our new favorite place to go to for that exquisite dining experience. We can't wait to return!!More

A wonderful location and building. We had dinner in the garden room which was delightful. The clam chowder was top drawer. All of us felt the food was perfect. The service was also excellent. We arrived for late dinner and we were not rushed.

We stopped in on our way to Mohonk and were wonderfully surprised with the upscale Irish fare. They had all of the staples — fish and chips, shepherds pie, etc.— but elevated. The Guinness crème brûlée was Fantastic. We definitely will come here again on...our next trip to Mohonk.More

My husband, daughter, son and I went to Garvan's for the first time to celebrate my birthday. We sat outside in the screened in Patio which was beautiful. We shared two appetizers - stuffed mushrooms and a Caprese special - both were good. For entrees,...we got the hamburger (did not care for the Focaccia bun), the shortribs - VG but not enough gravey served with it, the lamb stew - VG, and the seafood trio - VG - so I would say 3 out of 4 entrees were VG. My husband and i got the house salad and it was VG. Too much food though - and pretty pricey (Shortribs was the most expensive at $43) - next time (and we will go back) we would probably go with one appetizer and maybe skip (or share) a salad. Our waitress was excellent and I am so sorry I don't remember her name but we sat on the Patio and our reservation was at 6:30 on a Wednesday evening in the beginning of August. Beautiful setting! <3More

My wife and I drove to Garvan's while visiting the Hudson Valley and were not disappointed. The restaurant is tucked away in a lovely cull de sac in New Palz. From the outside is rather uninspiring but once inside you find yourself in a warm,...comfortable put atmosphere. We ate on the screen enclosed patio in order to enjoy the summer weather. The service and the food were excellent and the variety of beers and ales was impressive. Without a doubt, order the braised short rib with the garlic mashed potatoes. The meat was flavorful, tender and just fell off the bone. The mashed potatoes were unlike any that we've had in the past and were delicious. There is no doubt that we would return for another meal.More

I feel kind of bad writing this review. We’ve been patrons here for a few years now. The last few times we’ve gone, we’ve been disappointed in the quality of food, but our experience tonight sealed the deal for this 2 star review. Ambiance and...service are still good. We sat outside which was great, but noticed that inside was a little smelly/musty as we walked through to be seated outside. A bad smell in a restaurant sets the stage for questioning how things are being managed. They need to get to the root of this ASAP in order to keep from turning people off. We ordered salads to start. They used to serve a large portion that was fresh, flavorful and properly dressed. My salad tonight was about the size of the palm of my hand and was way over dressed to the point of being soggy. My husband ordered the ribeye for $39 and it was about 3/8 thick and had a weird (possibly canned?) sauce that was extremely disappointing. Potatoes were banquet style -missing any fresh, gourmet taste or flare. When you go out to dinner for a special occasion, you shouldn’t feel as though you’re 1 of 200 getting served a mediocre plate. At a banquet, you expect that. Not when you go out for a special meal. I ordered the shrimp scampi which was served with a lemon basil sauce. There was 4 teeny tiny shreds of basil. The rest was dried parsley. Really, they couldn’t afford basil which SOO easy to come by? The dish had Poor flavor (mostly plain butter), and shrimp were on the small side. I asked for Parmesan with my pasta, and they brought me mozzarella shreds. Really, no Parmesan? How could they not have a staple for a pasta dish?? We would consider our meal worse than standard diner food. Way overpriced for what we received.More

Best restaurant, Iris pub and place to meet friends in New Paltz, if not the entire Hudson Valley. The food is very good, Garvan will greet you, and make sure you have a pint at the pub! You’ll need reservations and Thursday nights is usually...Irish night with music, story telling and a good laugh.More

The food was good…I had the Caesar salad, which was tasty and overdressed, so was a bit salty…the dressing is good and is made in the restaurant. I had the duck breast, which came with a sweet potato puree and asparagus. The duck was cooked...to medium rare as requested and the vegetables were tasty. The dining experience suffered because I was seated in the screened in patio and felt isolated there, since I was the only one there, and the door to the restaurant was closed with a sign saying “Please use the main entrance”. It was early, being 5:30pm, and the main indoor restaurant was empty, but there were people seated outside on the lawn, since two other parties came in when I did.More
