Arrived at 7.00 pm to a booked table. Our meals of steak and suckling pig were eventually served st 8.20 pm. Our waiting person had done her best to move us up the queue however apparently the suckling pig was the ( unresolved) problem. The place was full and under staffed. We won't return. The meal was good pub food... More

The railway hotel features a dining room with an extensive menu and a beer garden with a smaller, pub classic, menu. On this occasion we ate in the dining room - despite the large crowd the service was prompt and attentive. I'd recommend booking on the weekends to ensure you can get a table. The meals were all very large... More

Went for Sunday lunch recently. The Parma was genorous. A whole fillet. Unfortunately this means the thick end is somewhat over cooked. Chips just not what we have come to expect and salad ordinary. The whole grilled whiting was very, very bony. Battered fish was fine. Steaks looked appealing and maybe that's their forte and the Curries sounded interesting. Might try... More

We had a great dinner here. The staff were great. The wine list was reasonable and the food was pretty good. I would go back.

As a resident of Castlemaine always felt confident to take visitors to the Railway for a great meal in a great atmosphere but a week ago 3 of us who ordered the same suckling pig meal were somewhat disappointed. Although the flavours were excellent the pork was very dry and although there was a lovely tasty sauce - one tsp... More

Such a cosy hotel with a great variety on the menu, so much so it was REALLY hard to choose. The food we had was better than you're average pub meal by far. Definitely recommend dining here.

This was the third place we looked at and we weren't expecting it to be such a find. The delightful Jacqueline warmly welcomed us, despite being very busy, and Tully the barman provided excellent wine knowledge. The menu initially didn't seem interesting and we felt it was designed for local tastes, but we finally found the Muscovy Duck with "cutlet... More

First time at this lovely hotel. It's tucked away behind the railway station, hence the name, and very welcoming. Lovely lunch with interstate friends. We all ordered seafood which was served beautifully in a lovely dining room type setting. Beers and wine were served at perfect temperatures and the waiting staff very professional. Thoroughly recommended and we will return.

Description
The Railway Hotel is located in the historic township of Castlemaine within the goldfields area in central Victoria. The Hotel dates back to the mid 1800's and is one of a few surviving hotels from the bustling gold boom era. The Hotel is located adjacent to the historic working railway station which services the Melbourne to Bendigo line as well at the Steam Trains from both Maldon and Melbourne. The Hotel has a real vintage feel of a bygone era incorporating a locals bar, bistro and bar and outside verandah area. The "Railway" is a welcoming and inviting place for locals and travellers with an award winning chef preparing food sourced locally and a range of local beers and ciders on tap. Our spirit wall hosts an inviting range of imported whiskey and bourbon choices and our wine range supports the vineyards of our region.
