IF you want a good never frozen burger cooked to your specifications (medium rare of course) wander Franklin Street no further. Al's facility is meant for little people, It is the smallest eatery on the planet. However it serves up burgers with the quality of 5 Star burger emporium. Plenty of outside seating on picnic tables in a sheltered heated rustic glass windowed enclosure. The locals flock here by the gaggle for lunch. I understand why. most of the time there is a line of 5-12+ folks waiting to order (it is worth the wait). If you have a hankering for a juicy, tasty, burger with excellent fries or sweet-potato fries Als' is simply THE place to keep you coming back again and again. When my grandson is visiting from the Netherlands he immediately asks if we can go to "Al's Shacky Burgers". I never deny him, nor myself. See you there. I will be savoring my Mookie burger, Al size.

I could go on and on, gushing about Al's for eternity, but I know you don't want to sit here for that long so I'll try to keep it short and simple. I moved to Chapel Hill when I was nine and I have been eating Al's ever since. They have an amazing veggie burger, so vegetarians like me can go there without worrying about having to just eat some fries for dinner because they might not have options, but Al's does. Speaking of fries, their crinkle cut and sweet potato fries are devine, as well as their service. They might have a long line every once in a while, but the employees are so kind and attentive. Their system during quarantine made it quick and easy to get delicious food. The atmosphere of the interior is retro, cute, and really showcases the small business in a small-town vibe. Overall, I think Al's Burger Shack is my favorite restaurant in Chapel Hill, and most likely will be until the day I die.

Honestly, I was amazed by how delicious the burger was based off the price. I’ve paid $10 for a burger and it wasn’t nearly as flavorful as this place. I ordered the Maco with a side of half & half fries. Burger was cooked to perfection (medium as it should be) & smelled like pure love. Highly recommend this place. Can’t go wrong.

We looked forward to going to Al’s, we live in Fayetteville. My granddaughter has Dr. appts in Chapel Hill and even with that She looks forward to Al’s. Well yesterday we were disappointed bad 🙁. They changed their burgers making them smaller and it seems they lost some flavor too. These burgers cost is high, but the last time we went they were a decent size and a great flavor. The place was busy too. Well yesterday we were there at lunch and they didn’t have near the business. I see why now!! I had even ordered 2 extra for later. Their fries were over cooked and last time they were delicious. I’m writing this hoping the owner will care enough to take a look at what is best. They had stated they changed the size ( smaller ) but they still charged a lot for their food. They said they changed so the burgers would be better cooked and could give faster service. Well it was a major mistake. My burgers were all really pink inside ( raw ) I hate writing this after having such a great experience the last time. Think it was over 6 months ago. But we all had been really looking forward to her appt. day. When your charging a lot, change can hurt you if it doesn’t live up to prior quality.

Best Burger I’ve had in a long time! It is a two hand burger that is juicy and bursting with flavor! My family of four all got different burgers and every one of us raved about it. Easy to order online and within easy walking distance from the hotel we were staying at. It looks like a hole in the wall but the sanitation rating was 99.5! Will make this a regular on future trips!

I went to Al’s Burger with a friend. I had a Classic burger and asked for a medium for meat patties. The service at the cash register is very flat. The staff cannot even remember my order and asks me to repeat. Then the burger came out with a well-done meat patties instead. It is not salty enough. The vanilla milkshake is a bit too sweet but creamy. It’s a bit disappointing.

Ok Folks!! It may not l👀k like it outside but this place is the Taj Mahal for a Burger 🍔 or a Hotdog 🌭 plus all the other items. We came up from Fayetteville for a Dr. appt, my wife and I enjoy finding these ( Real Old Style ) Good Food Places. You won’t want another fast food burger again. This is another place in N. C. That’s well worth the miles, time and or wait. We ordered on the way there. Really nice lady taking the orders over the phone. Folks when I picked up that amazing burger it just looked and smelled like ok take your time, this ain’t gonna last long. Lol It was so GOOD, I just bit, then looked at it, shook my head and went for it again. 👍🏻 i was right it didn’t take long. The fries are the best too. Oh, I got a Hotdog too. People that was a awesome Hotdog. I was kinda full so I was gonna save the dog. Well I messed up, I took a bite just to see. I bit, laid it down and my eyes were like oh no lol. The wife got tickled at me. I picked up the hotdog 3 times biting then putting it down. The 4th. Time was the last time, I said to myself ok take your time, pssst it didn’t take long. lol My Compliments to Big Al’s for causing me to lose track of time. I do know it may have left the building, but that food was 5 ⭐️ Good. I’ll Be Backkkkkk!!!

We recently moved to Chapel Hill from Durham and all that anyone ever talks about is Al's. We decided to give it a try and we are hooked! The burgers are good, but the fries and sweet potato fries are out of these world good. People have said they are not fresh cut each day, but honestly they season them so well and are cooked just right that I don't even care! They have Maple View Ice Cream shakes which are VERY sweet but I love MV Ice Cream so I don't mind. Love that they serve veggie burgers and turkey burgers in addition to their hamburgers. Decently priced. Southern Village location is so cute and lots of places to eat outside. Give it a try next time you are in town!

This was an OK place to get a burger, but I could never understand the slogan on the t-shirts that employees wear, "Good is Good Y'all." I would have chosen 'Good isn't Good Enough'. Now that they are bilking creditors and tax payers by declaring bankruptcy and planning to carry on business, I would now propose "Wrong is Wrong Y'all, Even if It's Legal." I'm finished with these burgers.

Al’s Burgers is a must try if you find yourself in Chapel Hill, NC. It is located just off the UNC campus and a local favorite. We had lunch there and were very satisfied with the entire experience. They have covered/uncovered seating and you order at the main counter and they run the food to your table. We had the Paco burger (Guacamole and Jalapeños), the Pimento Cheese burger, and the Cheddar Bacon burger. With a huge side of tater tots and crinkle fries. The burgers were excellent. We highly recommend Al’s if you are looking for a quick and easy lunch experience in Tarheel country.

I am not sure if the people who ranked this among the best in the country are people who usually eat at McDonald's. It's a very good burger, but not exceptional if you are comparing it to "the best". At that level of praise, you should have your hands slapped for serving frozen french fries. Friendly service. Nice patio, but too many students who believe that social distancing is not holding hands.

Burgers are very good. Wasn't impressed with the current ordering process at Southern Village. Went for burgers for my family on 2/3/21. I understand all the restrictions due to COVID these days. You can't go into the restaurant. You have to order by phone while you are looking through the window at person taking your order. You pay by credit card while other people are standing around listening to you give them credit card info. Then you stand outside in the cold waiting for your order? They have tables with letters so they call your name when they have the order and if your not there they place it on the table and go back inside. So it sits there for anyone to take if they want getting cold. Not impressed at all. I'll be hard pressed to go back and experience that again anytime soon!

So sad I ordered a chocolate shake. Menu board promises Maple View Farm milkshakes and Al uses chocolate ice cream from Maple View but he adds Choc syrup - prob Hersheys. Next time I’ll order vanilla. The Paco burger is amazing. My mouth waters when I’m nearby.

Could only give 2 stars because they changed from a house made black bean veggie burger to a pre-made store bought veggie burger that did not taste good. Al’s previous homemade black bean burger was awesome! With a vegetarian in the family, the homemade veggie burger was a big reason my family and I ate there almost every weekend. Now we have stopped going to Al’s and will only return if the house made veggie patty is back on the menu. We loved Al’s so we are sad to leave.
