Very accommodating with reservations. Appreciated the rustic decor, but somewhat disappointed by the meal itself. The scallops were so tiny & not local, so overpriced for what we received. The service was good but we felt rushed to leave once our meal was finished.

The place is ok inside, nothing fancy. Menu selection limited as well as wine selection. Three wines on the menu, only two available and over priced for the selection. We drank it anyway! Some bread brought to table, had to ask for some side plates....Appetizers were good, potstickers and beet fritters with smoked salmon...no complaints there. Four of us had the cod...this was bonavista and lots of fish in the water....well this was the smallest portion of cod I have ever had in a restaurant, and I have eaten in quite a few and know the usual size portions at St. John's finest locations. It was tasty and cooked well but hold back on the potatoes and up the cod please..$26 bucks..really?. Oh and garden greens as your veggie, turnip greens?? Well had to have dessert and the lemon cake and my carrot cake were very good. Coffee with that which was pretty good but a spoon would have been nice to stir it up with. These guys need to do better.More

This was my third experience at this establishment and disappointed in consideration of past experiences, which is unfortunate. Portions were very small, menu was very limited with food lacking flavor and a wow factor. Service unfortunately also left much to be desired with limited enthusiasm...and follow up service. For the price you pay for this establishment, unfortunately I may not return.More

On our first visit to the Boreal Diner on a previous trip we were so amazed with it and were looking forward to going back on this visit. We went twice on this visit and were not as taken with it this time. To be...fair, on the first visit I had a cod dish which was fabulous. My husband (vegetarian) had a veg dish which was just ok. The next visit we both had burgers, mine beef and his veggie. These were both quite frankly a real disappointment. Very average and on the small side, to he honest. Maybe burgers are on the menu for people who don't want seafood and are an afterthought. Our server was ok but not all that engaging, like the staff in the kitchen is. Boreal has a lovely atmosphere and I realize they are trying to provide something different so the menu can change from time to time and I applaud them for that. But this time it just didn't work that well for us. Would I give it another chance on our next visit? Yes, I wouldn't avoid a place on the basis on one lesser-than visit because our first one was so good.More

We went here for lunch as we drove through Bonavista. The menu as others have indicated, is quite limited, but to their credit they tell you this up front on their website. We both ordered Cod which was on a bed of navy beans. I...was ok with the serving size of cod, but the navy beans seemed to be the "filler" of the meal (like, it was a lot!). The cod itself was good and this meal also had stewed vegetables. I just wish that there had been less of the beans and perhaps more stewed vegetables. Given the quantity of fish as compared to the beans, we found the cost to be quite pricey. Overall however, a very quaint and unique spot to visit.More

Not sure what other dinners were eating but this restaurant did not live up to the reviews. Limited menu choices, cod and polenta should really be billed as a mountain of polenta with a garnish of cod. We did not enjoy our experience at all....Think you should go elsewhere.More

Cannot go to Bonavista and not go to this fabulous restaurant !More

Arrived and sat at a table with direct view into the sunset. You would think the diner would turn the table around to eliminate this. Drinks were ordered and served and we were never approached again for a water top up or another drink. The...menu was reactively limited. The cod was literally sitting on a full plate of polenta. The burger seriously overpriced. The scallops for entree were good.More

The restaurant itself is very nice with upstairs and down stairs seating.Servers were friendly and the food came out quickly. We were disappointed in the overall quality of the food as well as what you got for what you pay. For appetisers the scallops are...very tiny (maybe the size around of your finger... never saw scallops that small in a dish that cost $12) and only about 6 on the plate. The calamari app was also very small. It tasted ok but was so overdone the rings were tough and chewy. But it was the mains that we found so disappointing. This place has a very small menu so we ended up choosing the cod fish with polenta. It arrives in a high sided dish more like a bowl than a plate. A very small piece of cod and vegetables sit on top of a huge serving of polenta. The polenta overpowered the fish. At $27 per serving we would have expected enough fish that we could taste it (less than 4 oz of fish). Would not recommend this place and will not go back.More

One of the best and most refreshing meals of my trip to NL. Wonderful and friendly restaurant serving contemporary takes on some traditional foods. I ate scallops, followed by delicious cod, with vegetables and polenta and proper homebaked partridge berry pie. Absolutely delicious, highly recommend....Book in advance if you can, it gets busy!More
