A really interesting small and cosy venue to pop in to. Loved the "grannies bloomers" hanging on the wooden drying racks in front of the fire. I had the most enormous tea cake I have ever had and my husband had a scone. Both were...More

What a wonderful old building. Mind you, the steps are not for the fainthearted. Also, what a terrific delicatessen upstairs. The main event, lunch, was also good – apart from one nagging problem. I had a spectacular corn beef hash, one of the best ever,...More

Popped in for lunch, my jacket spud was crispy, well cooked with a very generous side salad and homemade coleslaw. My hubby had tomato & roasted red pepper soup with a turkey, stuffing & cranberry sarnie which he said was delicious. Yes, it was a...More

Came here for lunch. Fisherman's platter was particularly good, as was the salmon croissant. The staff were friendly and calm, despite the difficult cramped conditions. There are not many tables, so some people had to wait upstairs until one became available. They may have slightly...More

This was our first visit to Grannies. My husband and I went down the stone steps into the little, basement café where there were several unoccupied tables & my husband chose the table which was the easiest to access, but unfortunately we were not allowed...More

Called in for a bite to eat. The smell emanating from the shop was so delicious you couldn't not go in. We made our way down to the basement a most delightful room. We had curried parsnip soup. An absolutely amazing flavour. Followed by a...More

We popped in for some takeaway bits for lunch. We ordered two ham and cheese paninis and had to wait quite a while for them even though it wasn't busy. They were highly over priced and just plain average.

Grannies Tea room and Delicatessen was established around 1984, then the tearoom only held a couple of tables placed within the shop. It was only later, in 1989, that the intimate downstairs tea room was developed within the basement where the old fashioned coal chutes, old style steps, fireplace and flagstone flooring can still be seen. Grannies is a strong advocate for the local food movement in Alnwick, and offers a wide range of local produce within the deli, shop and tea room.
