Ragleth Inn
Review
About
Travellers' Choice
2024
Situated in the lovely village of Little Stretton 12 miles south of Shrewsbury, The Ragleth Inn is set in beautiful countryside a quarter of a mile off the A49.Dating back to 1663, the Ragleth Inn offers all you expect from an English Country Inn. The village is just south of Church Stretton, lying snug between the hills on what used to be the main road to Ludlow before it was by-passed. To the east are the wooded slopes of the Ragleth and to the west rises the Long Mynd. The Ragleth boasts one of the best pub gardens in Shropshire, set in approximately half an acre of lovely shrubs and trees. With the Ragleth Hill to one side, and the Longmynd to the other, the surrounding views are spectacular. The garden itself has benches which can seat up to 70 and is ideal for younger children with two large trampolines. Just two minutes walk behind the pub is the Small Batch campsite, nestled at the base of Ashes Hollow. The Ragleth offers two lounges with seating for 40 between them. There is also a separate dining room, which overlooks the garden area, and which seats 30.The new propriaters took over as new owners of The Ragleth Inn in June 2005. They closed the pub straight away to completely renovate it. The first thing was to knock off the plaster and expose all the lovely old brick walls and sand blast the old beams back to the original. Having fitted a new log burner in one of the lounges, The Ragleth now guarantees a warm and friendly welcome.

Went here for lunch today. This was not on the list I had prepared as my list is confined to Worcestershire and visiting pubs at the weekend, seem my earlier reviews on this. However, my wife found this place and we drove over an hour to get here for lunch. It's just past Craven Arms and as you drive through the small town you willl see the turn off to Little Stretton about 1 mile out of town. What a find!!!!!
The pub is on the main road in the village just down from the Green Dragon (we must also visit there sometime). There is a large car park at the side of the pub but if there are lots of people already eating there it might be tight to find a spot and visitors may have to park on the main road.
The pub is lovely inside with ceiling beams and lovely quiet corners to eat. The place was quite full but we did not really hear other voices and although we were sat at a table tor two near the bar it felt remarkably quiet.
I had a pint of shandy and my wife had a Diet Coke. We were then shown the fair. The menu is not over large with about 4/5 starters and mains and 4/5 desserts although there are more on the other side of the page.
She had cheese, cauliflower and garlic soup and I had a trio of cheeses for starters with some sliced beetroot . My wife said the soup was so much better than it sounds and my cheeses were lovely. She then had the Pork and Black Pudding and I had the Brie and Beetroot tart with new potatoes for mains. Two empty plates afterwards says it all really.
We decided to be greedy and chose desserts. My wife had the Chocolate Fondant and I had the Apple and Respberry Pie with proper custard. The fondant was cooked wonderfully with the warm chocolate gushing out from the side (cooked properly) with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream. It was rich by the way, so she did to eat it all. My apple pie was some of the best I had eaten for a long time. Delicious.
The bill came to just over £70 and as I left opted to leave a 10% tip on the machine I paid just under £80. Absolutely worth it and the village on its own is beautiful anyway.
Best lunchtime meal we have had since last week really when we had Sunday Lunch in Worcestershire. But being serious, definitely a place to visit and anyone travelling in the area who might read this review should "not" just drive past and give this place a miss. Excellent food and great value for money. British Pubs are well known for their welcome and their menus. This place should be added to the list.

Having been advised that the Ragleth Inn does a ‘cracking Sunday lunch’ my husband and I drove almost an hour to the delightful area of Little Stretton.
Not having researched the Inn previously we were unsure what exactly to expect, but straight away we were greeted with extreme warmth by the owner and manager and felt very welcomed.
We were not disappointed in any way, service was extremely quick despite being very busy, this is obviously a well known gem in the area. Firstly a very welcome drink was supplied and then both my husband and I decided upon the lamb, which was amazing, it was flavourful and tender This was accompanied by crispy roast potatoes, a selection of tasty vegetables, home made Yorkshire pudding and the most delicious gravy.
Although the portion was generous, I have a sweet tooth and wanted to try the espresso crème brûlée, which also came with a homemade shortbread biscuit. My husband chose the raspberry Bakewell tart with custard.
The result was 2 very full and content people.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this venue and very much look forward to a return visit.

The setting, and unspoiled layout of the pub really are spot on, and there is a very good welcome.
A wide range of options, and all the food was superbly prepared and presented. It really was a perfect evening in every way.
The young staff members did an excellent job, and I hope will grow in confidence as time goes on. It really does make a difference when team members show it matters to them that diners have a good experience.
Overall, a wonderful visit, and I hope to be back sometime!

We are regular visitors for lunch and have always enjoyed the freshly cooked meals, presented beautifully. On the most recent occasion we waited 40 minutes for our order, understandably cooked from fresh so expected this. After receiving our food we were asked if everything was alright, which it was, albeit the meals are quite large.
Having waited a long time for our plates to be cleared and to be asked whether we would like a dessert, we gave up and we left the table to pay at the bar. We didn’t want a dessert, but that’s not the point. Very poor service on this occasion.

Turned up on a Wednesday evening without having made a booking, and although the indoor dining area was completely full up, they were able to seat us in the covered wooden garden room round the back. Although we had a wait for our food ( due to it being so busy) it was well worth the wait. Generous platefuls of piping-hot, well-presented , appetising food - and the best chips we’ve had in a long time. Can fully recommend the lasagne, and the gammon steaks. Unfortunately, too full up to contemplate a pudding. Exceptionally friendly, polite , and prompt service from staff, despite being run off their feet . A charming gastropub in a lovely village.

What a joy to find this gem of a place. The best pub food you are likely to get. An excellent menu with some dishes that are a little different from the usual pub fare. Lovely cosy place to spend an evening with attentive service and good food. Prices are very competitive, especially when you consider what you can pay for very mediocre food. Booking is recommended as this place gets very busy even midweek. We ate here while staying in the area but really wish we had a place like this in our home area.

Well, we could certainly tell why this place is so popular when we visited for my husband’s birthday. We were told we should book in advance and we were glad we did as it was so busy all evening.
Little Stretton is a pretty little village and the pub makes it a place worthy of stopping longer.
Service was very friendly throughout and the menu very varied and catered for gluten free needs.
My husband had a steak pie and I had a gluten free sweet potato and onion marmalade tart. Afterwards I had the crème brûlée with gluten free shortbread and hubby the ice cream. All was absolutely delicious.
We would drop in for drinks a few days later and the place was just as busy in the afternoon. Just a shame it isn’t closer to where we live in the Eastmidlands.

Sadly we were underwhelmed .Had booked for a dinner with friends and despite phoning in advance twice to say that we were bringing a dog we were told we would have to go outside as this hasn’t been noted on the booking
These things happen but not a good start.
A very nice couple heard and offered to move who we were able to stay inside
The last serving us was extremely miserable - I guess she may have had a bad day. The food was reasonable but no where near as good as our experience as at the Greendragon we had visited the day before.
They missed some of the elements of the meal ( chilli jam on the Halloumi burger) and as no one came to check or offer condiments I had to ask.
The same lady provided the condiments and missing jam with scowl and no check if we were ok.
We had read the reviews and hoped for much better having looked at the reviews but this wasn’t our experience

Bitterly disappointed! The wine menu was all stained & stickyWe both had gammon & chips with 1 mushroom , 1/2 tomato, & 1 ring of tinned pineapple !when asked by the waiter , how was your meal (I’d left all the chips & most of everything else), I told him it was very greasy, he responded with‘I’ll tell the kitchen, all feedback is good feedback 😡. No apologies or reimbursement. Didn’t even stop for a 2nd drink . Give this place a miss ,

I have never tasted such a delicious roast belly pork in my life. Tender with amazing crackling & served with a fabulous assortment of vegetables.
There were 22 in our group & our food was served quickly by really nice waitresses. Hot fondant chocolate pudding was out of this world.

Conflict within this review. The food was excellently cooked, however the portion size was suitable for a child. A lesson in how to squeeze more spend out of the customers by leaving them hungry for additional courses. Such a shame as the the taste was really good.

A very warm welcome from the minute we walked in and very attentive services in this lovely country pub, our first visit there and certainly will not be our last, superb quality food and very generous portions presented extremely well. Cant wait to come back again. Compliments to both the kitchen team and front of house, many establishments seem to have lost of what a 'good customer experience' looks like, NOT this place, keep up the great work.

We had the most amazing Sunday lunch here. The food was first class, fresh, cooked to perfection and the customer service was great!! Without a doubt the best food in the area of Church Stretton which I frequent for dining. This will be my new go to place.

A warm welcome and the most delicious food. We'd booked a table for 6 for a family meal. Everyone ordered something different, although the burgers were very popular, and it was all delicious! Saved room for pudding and we weren't disappointed 😋 Would thoroughly recommend but would advise booking to avoid disappointment, as a very popular spot!

A group of 4 of us had a fantastic Sunday lunch at the Ragleth Inn. The place was fully, warm and very friendly atmosphere. The choice of roasts was amazing, a far bigger selection than I was expecting. Two of us went for beef brisket, one lamb and one turkey. All were delicious and served with a great selection of veg including some lovely red cabbage and crispy roast potatoes. I will certainly be back!
