Just a sleepy experience. Nothing I had put a pep to my step or tickled my fancy at all. Food was average. Nothing stood out. Crab salad=salty, lamb ragu=average, pork chop=flavorful but dry and pound cake=ok. Wanted to give a lower score but there is potential.

Since its opening several years ago, we've considered clarklewis one of Portland's best places. But having dined there again since a year ago, our good impressions have faded. It's not the same original culture. We checked the Portland Dining Month menu online in early March, and liked the clarklewis choices for this special menu. We especially looked forward to the... We went to celebrate a birthday but really wanted to eat here on the Portland Dining Month menu. Service was good and attentive. The atmosphere was on the loud side but that was okay as we had a 5 year old and an 8 month old. The appetizer were some cheeses and pickled onions and peppers along with hazelnuts. I... More

This is a cool old warehouse space, with a earthy organic vibe. Cosy and rustic. Wood burning kitchen right in the open for all to see is very cool. Menu features seasonal "farm-to-table" style. Enjoyed a decent dinner here with co-workers one evening. I loved the seafood stew appetizer and wish i would have ordered it for my entree, as... More

There were six people in total. We went on a Tuesday evening- and they were not at all busy. Our server was nice but with the exception of 2 salads and desserts, the food was really disappointing. The meat was tough and lacked flavor. The drinks were also very disappointing. I had the worst Margarita I have every had, others... More

Cecelia: I'm sorry you found Clarklewis on an off-night. I cannot explain or excuse the disappointing food and cocktails, but I can promise that it will be better on your next visit -- if we are lucky enough to see you here again. Until then... Best, Bruce Carey, owner More

We were looking forward to a nice lunch at Clarklewis. Initially we couldn't find a parking place, so one of us dropped the other off to go in and get a table. The other one who was driving circled many, many blocks for many minutes and never found a parking place. I don't mean a free space, I mean ANY... More

Frank: I'm so sorry your difficulty with parking at lunch has flavored your opinion of Clarklewis so negatively. It is hard to find a spot for lunch, and as a result we tend to attract people who work in the nearby vicinity. HOWEVER, please note that parking is plentiful and free every night after 6:00 pm in the lot surrounding... More

Went here on the recommendation of a business associate. So glad we did. We decided to try the four-course chef's choice and glad we did. OMG they give you way too much fabulous food and you almost feel bad about not eating it (not really). What a fun night. The Beet salad was amazing. The Steelhead cooked to perfection with... More

We ate at clarklewis the night the 3rd snow storm hit. It was magical eating a wonderful meal, in a comfortable low-key restaurant watching the snow fall. Outstanding service and wine. We ate there on a previous visit to Portland and the experience lived up to our memories. I have food sensitivities and they willingly adjusted my dinner to fit—it... More

Dear Garden-Visitor: Thank you for making your way through the snow to come enjoy Clarklewis. We made an extra effort during those snow days to keep the restaurant open and it is very rewarding to hear that it was worthwhile for you. Come visit again, perhaps when those glass doors are open to outside. It makes for another magical evening.... More

I had a wonderful squash and parsnip soup and husband had fresh pasta with a lamb ragu sauce. We shared a decadent chocolate and ganache cake. They cheerfully answered menu questions and honored our request to serve a praline crumble on the side (husband has a pecan allergy). Open kitchen was fun to watch and the black painted warehouse interior... More

A lovely spot for a restaurant, not a bad view out at Water street. Minimalistic design with outstanding food, wine and service. Appetizers included clams and a artisan cheese plate. The bread served on the table was fabulous, light and moist with a chewy crust. We had the pear and apple salad. Very tasty with champagne vinaigrette and candied nuts... More
