Located in a popular section of Pittsburgh where you can walk to restaurants, coffee shops, specialty and clothing stores, this bakery has stood the test of time and is our favorite place to purchase the burnt almond torte as our special occasion cake. Yum!

Burnt Almond Torte and a sour cream chocolate. I've had the latter in a birthday cake and sheet cake; it was delicious! Burnt almond torte is something we buy every time we go here - even if we get a mini or a single serving size. Others in this area have tried to copy the torte but have not succeeded.... More

As soon as you walk through the door of Prantl's bakery, you smell the unbelievable aromas of freshly made pastries, breads, cakes, and more. I would drive for hours to buy one of their almond tortes. The bakers spare nothing. Toppings and fillings are piped and spread on just with the right amount. Your mouth waters as you look over... Almond Torte is still fabulous but over priced and their Birthday cakes used to be great ,But they now make their cakes with very little cake and a lot of icing......I don't know about you but I want cake...not a lot of icing left on the plate of guests....and that is exactly what you get for a very expensive price.....Prantl's... At Prantl's we try to price our products competitively with other area bakeries, and the process for toasting our almonds to be just right is laborious. As far as our birthday cakes go, it's a fine line between too much or too little icing. I myself love icing, where I have a friend that doesn't, so we usually swap ...... More

My family are big fans of the Burnt Almond Torte cake for special occasions. We recommend buying whole cake, not slices. They can tend to be dry. Worth the trip for this delicious cake!

Description
Prantl's Bakery is a Pittsburgh institution. Its "Burnt Almond Torte" and 100+ sinful sweets have been a tradition for the last 40 years. In fact, there's been a bakery in continuous operation at the flagship Shadyside store for over 100 years. Prantl's is a bakery in the German tradition, with old-fashioned fruit Danish and nut-filled coffeecakes, but we can't help but get excited about some of our "new favorites" as well, like key lime pie and our buttery croissants. In addition to our mouth watering special order cakes, we are famous for our "Burnt Almond Torte", which was conceived by Henry Prantl after a trip to California. There was an almond glut the year he went and the Almond Board was trying to get bakers to use almonds in new and inspiring ways. Henry picked up a few ideas and brought them back to Pittsburgh where he refined them into our current recipe for "Burnt Almond Torte", a unique and addictive dessert. If you've never had one, you really do have to try one. If you have had one, you know what we're talking about! Henry and Jane Prantl retired from the business in 2007. The bakery is now owned and operated by John M. Felice, who strives to maintain the tradition of high quality baked goods. We hope you agree . .
