We are frequent diners at Fiddler’s and have been eating here for years. Today was hugely disappointing - not sure if there’s been a change in the kitchen staff or similar but our fried whiting (our fav) was not good. Actually, both my husband and...I are certain the whiting filets we were served were previously frozen and thawed, it had that old, freezer burned taste to it despite the usual delicious batter and fry. Also, I asked for my fish filet to be fried well done because I don’t like my fish ‘wet’ under the fried batter. The young girl at the counter acknowledged my request but the fish came out undercooked and oozing enough liquid that it soaked the liner of my basket. Ugh. There is a big difference between moist and undercooked fish. My 2nd combo pick was shrimp. Of the 8 pieces of shrimp in the basket, 4 of them were extremely small and tasteless. The other 4 had, as is usual for Fiddler’s, their tails on and they were plump and very good. My husband’s fish was exactly like mine, questionable in taste and texture and undercooked; however, his fried oysters were hot, fresh and delicious he said. THAT is what we have always appreciated about this locally owned restaurant and seafood store - fresh, hot and delicious. I did speak to the young girl about the fish, she looked ‘doe-eyed’ 😳 and left the table edge, the owner was in the back eating we were told. Their shrimp sauce, my fav, was watery and bland today, the dirty rice was totally over-spiced with Old Bay. Last, the collards had decent flavor but there were way too many stems and leaf chunks that were folded every which way to fit into the styrofoam cup. I used the plastic knife to remove 1/2 the stems and cut off the collard leaf after which they became edible. Because of the price paid and the disappointing seafood we received during this visit, I’m giving Fiddler’s a 3. Going back? Probably not. Sad.More
