I was buying some petrol one day and noticed the Red Door. Must have a look, I thought and to my great surprise I found some delicious and tempting treats inside. Sit for a while or take them away. I have done both and intend...continuing to do so.More
We stopped for a late family lunch at this cafe after viewing the glorious autumn foliage in Macedon town. Our first chouce cafe was closed for the Easter weekend and after reading good reviews of the Red Door we arrived to find it located right...next to a service station. Usually this would mean a poor choice of food (e.g. a few potato cakes and some stale sandwiches)and not great quality BUT not in this case! This is a real hidden gem - do not let its location put you off! It was warm and welcoming with a great selection of papers and books to browse through. A wide menu which catered well for all tastes, including a great choice for vegetarians, and ranged from a variety of breakfasts, burgers, omelettes to freshly made wraps and sandwiches. Our family was delighted with our meals, we ordered a selection of vegetarian breakfasts, burgers and fries plus an omelette. There was a wait for the meals however the food was cooked fresh and well worth the wait. The empty plates at the end of the meal was a testament to the quality of the meals. An excellent little cafe.More
If you want to step back in time to the 50's and 60's, then get off the Calder Freeway at Macedon and travel on the old highway. Part of the service station, the Red Door is an old-fashioned yet somehow contemporary experience.
Great food -...alongside the humble fish and chips, house-made sausage rolls, hamburgers and steak sandwiches "with the lot" - sit smashed-avocado and feta BLT's, scrambled eggs with mushrooms and spinach, and more!
As well as the laminex tables and vinyl-covered chairs (what else?) there are comfortable armchairs to relax in if you're just after a coffee or cuppa tea.
Did I mention the milkshakes? A huge range of flavours and smoothies available too! If you're heading north on the Calder Freeway, do yourself a favour and take the diversion to the Red Door Cafe!More
