Captain Bill's has the best Clam Chowder I have ever had. I go there just for that. I also really like the Coconut Shrimp. Great atmosphere!

Captain Bill's is a unique restaurant with nautical theme decor outside and inside, with a fireplace between the bar area and a dining area. We arrived a little earlier than our reservation time so we got a drink in the bar. The hostess was nice enough to offer us to let her know when we were ready to eat which... More

Nice patio for outdoor summer dining with view of Lake Mendota. Rustic interior. Great Friday fish fry. Amazing clam chowder.

Although they advertise the place as a waterfront restaurant, its actually about a block away from the water. You can see the lake but are not right on it. On a nice day, the deck is a great place to sit and have some wine and appetizers and look out at the lake in the near distance. The food is... More

We were encouraged by the welcoming appearance of the front entrance but it went downhill from there. The inside is charming in an old-Wisconsin kind of way, and the waterfront view is wonderful. But when we saw the flimsy plastic chairs on the patio, we decided to stay inside. Sadly, the food was just OK. One baked potato was obviously... More

We were here in the Spring and I wrote an unfavorable review. But last night 4 friends and I had a great meal. I was not excited to go because of my last experience, but what a difference in food and service. Our waitress, Emily was wonderful. Attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. We sat on the patio, it was a lovely... More

We decided dine at Captain Bill's for our anniversary. Our waiter never introduced himself. He simply walked up and said, "Are you ready to order, or what?" Each time he visited our table his disposition was short. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Breast with Mango Avocado Salsa. The Mango chunks were frozen which in turn, cooled the chicken. Not impressed.... More

Visited Captain Bills again this week for Restaurant week. We've been there many times and I am still looking for the "waterfront" dining experience. You can peak at Lake Mendota from some of the tables, some of the time, but this is not water front dining. And the outside furniture is made up of well-worn, stained plastic chairs. They were... Captain Bill's offers casual dining by the water. We sat outside on the deck but the bushes obscured our view as they were in need trimming. Staff were friendly and the atmosphere was pleasant.

I invited an elderly couple, one of whom uses a walker, to join me for dinner on a slow, beautiful evening. The food was just average as was the service. What was most distressing was the entrance to the restaurant. Access is across weathered wooden planks which are coming loose especially at the front near the driveway. There is a... More
