It's a small restaurant with a nice patio viewing towards the sea. We went for brunch without a reservation and luckily they had space available. I ordered eggs Benedict which were excellent, very flavourful, and fulfilling. The sweet hawaian bread with butter is a must,...as it was exquisite. I recommend this place a lot. The service from all the staff was excellent too. Thank you guys.More

Wow! What an experience! Mala tavern is a cute ocean front place that isn’t huge nor is it exceptionally “fancy” it’s perfect for your family dinners or couple date night. It’s a great place for any occasion. The ocean front views just makes the whole...experience special. It can get hot as the table umbrellas can only priced so much shade but it’s Maui.. there’s only so much one can do. So wear a wide brim hat or long sleeves if you’re especially sensitive to heat or the sun. Now… the food… AH MA ZING! We tried the Opakapaka fish as it was recommended to us before even getting to the restaurant. It’s not always available as fishing for this specific type is limited. We were excited to know it was offered and so we just had to go for it. We were so glad we did! Our waiter Danny was so helpful in making our appetizer, drink and meal selection. As we literally took apart our meal because it was too good to leave any bits behind, the manager Jesus stopped by our table to ask us how we enjoyed our meal and we chatted as if we were catching up with a good old friend. The staff are just so friendly and laid back. Get the poisson cru (ceviche) if it’s available. Tender and delicious! And Of course the Opakapaka if it’s available.More

I've been going here for over 20 years and used to love the former owners the food is gone from mediocre at best the customer service was the worst I've ever experienced and I completely understand the labor shortage that's going on out there but...guess what don't hire people that hate coming to work which was our waiter * 12 it's really sad to see a wonderful place go to hellMore

Had early reservations at Mala Tavern. It did not disappoint. We had a delicious meal with a great view overlooking the water. While dinning, we saw countless amounts of sea turtles feeding on the reef and poking up out of the water. There drinks were...fun and creative takes on classics. We started with two Makai Tais (Mai Tai’s) along with the famous Ahi Bruschetta, and oyster shooters (Bloody Mary and a Ponzu Shooter). Everything had great depth of flavor and was very delicious. For dinner we ordered the catch of the day, a white fish with chickpea purée, a pomegranate hibiscus sauce and Maui vegetables. We also had the Mala Signature Seared Ahi Tuna with Yukon Mash, Snap Peas and a Shiitake Mushroom Ginger Sauce. Both had complex flavors that melded well together and were cooked perfectly. We finished everything off with a notorious POG (pisco drink) and a Tropic Thunder (vodka, pineapple, mango and more). The whole dinning experience was great. The staff was very attentive, more than willing to help with suggestions, provided great service, made sure we were comfortable in the sun and kept us hydrated. We would highly recommend to friends and family to go here.More

This has been our most disappointing meal on this visit to Maui. I am not saying it was terrible, just totally underwhelming. When we ate here just before the pandemic it was memorable- the food, the service, the view. The service seemed to be halfhearted....Shake the Malasadas once, dump them out and walk off. I guess if you want to know the dipping sauces you can scan the code again yourself. Watch the hostess bite someone's head off that ask to move closer to the water only to see them reseat another party there. And, listen to the waiter tell 3 different tables they got the very last fish special when I know they had many more available. Hardly examples of good service. The food. I understand that we are a pandemic but the increase is substantial. OK, if you are going to charge $59'for scallops, then please season them. Still trying to understand how I feel like I just ate food loaded with MSG that was so bland. They were big. They were well cooked. They were just bland and uninspiring. Ambiance. Still a great view of the sunset, but somehow watching the staff dodge the tiny umbrellas, smelling the exhaust of passing cars, and feeling like they need to turn your table quickly, just doesn't feel the same. The place has clearly slipped and it seems that many returning customers feel the same way. Just read their reviews. Much better options including right next door at Frida's or even Star Noodle.More

We enjoyed a relaxing dinner here. We were outside with a limited view of the water, but it was still wonderful. The service was excellent and the food was even better! It wasn't easy to get a reservation for dinner here, so we were lucky....It was so good, we considered returning for brunch, but we never got the chance. Maybe next time! We will definitely be back on our next trip.More

My family and I dined here for lunch on our last day in Maui. I had the pancakes, my older son had the fish sandwich and my younger son had the breakfast plate. I ordered a mai tai—the best prepared cocktail I had during my...entire vacation. Service was excellent and the ambiance couldn’t be beat. There was a local musician and we could see sea turtles in the harbor. What a nice end to our vacation.More

My wife and i enjoyed lunch and were told that the ownership had recently changed. Our female server who has worked there for over 10 years was exceptional. The wonderful views of the harbor were just as good as we remember and our lunch entrees...melted or exceeded expectations. My wife’s sandwich (pictured) was the highlight of this visit.More
