A cross -country road trip found us staying at a decent motel on Lombardo street (the Franciscan Inn) in San Francisco, and this restaurant was nearby. Having been to Afghanistan many years ago (c. 1970 when it was free and a monarchy, before the Russians, before the Taliban, before the Americans!), I was intrigued to see if the food was... More

Our server was attentive and helpful with vegetarian suggestions. For the record, there are many options available! Everything was delicious, from the cauliflower appetizer through the mains with eggplant, okra, spinach, potatoes, carrots, and green beans. Even the rice was tasty! We had hoped to try some of the desserts, but the dinner was too delicious to leave anything for... More

Having not eaten Afghan food before, we were determined to try everthing! We ordered a wide range of dishes and thoroughly enjoyed everything, from the delectable starters through to the exquisite desserts and coffee. This is a quiet place with a calm ambience and excellent service. Highly recommend.

Helmand Palace has been around for years serving Afghani food. It is a rare restaurant that has tablecloths, well-spaced tables and low noise levels. You can talk, not yell, at your dinner companions. Service is friendly. You can linger at your table. And the food is very good. Our table had excellent pumpkin and eggplant appetizers. The noodle/dumpling dishes are... More

Helmand Palace is off the beaten path, but I read its great reviews and I decided to take a chance. It turned out to be the best food I had in my West Coast trip!! This place is romantic ( very appealing native music) and cozy ( beautifully decorated with paintings and pictures from Afghanistan). Service is attentive without being... More

San Francisco is a favorite city of ours. Walking the entire length & eating our way through is absolutely fantastic... great neighborhoods, views & cuisine. Among our top San Francisco gems is Helmand Palace. We always order the aush soup which is just wonderful with tender noodles & delicious meat sauce. My husband orders the kebab while I absolutely LOVE... More

One of our party of 9 is vegetarian so in an attempt to find some decent food she found this place recommended on the internet. We walked the mile or so down Van Ness as it was a pleasant evening and it isn't to steep for SF. From arriving at the restaurant the whole experience was great. The waiter was... More

My husband and I have been coming here for years. The restaurant used to be in North Beach. It had to relocate due to mudslide. The business did not miss a beat. The food is wonderful. I love the lamb dishes. My husband loves the koufta challow. The Aisha's is fabulous. Hubby gets it as an appetizer. I get it... More

Quite an unassuming place, however the food menu was very extensive, lots of suitable options for starters and mains like the daal, spinach, okra. For mains they have a range of dishes from kofta, chicken to lamb. I enjoyed, however one of our party members had a lamb dish and felt very ill afterwards. So maybe stay away from that.... More

Started coming when they were on Broadway, and the flavored are still excellent. An interesting blend of mogul, Indian & Persian flavors, this cuisine delights in it's depth and breadth, rich, deep, spicy and so good. Enjoy!

Staying in Russian Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
Russian Hill
Russian Hill has evolved into a chic residential neighborhood with outstanding views from every corner. Combined with several great cafes, restaurants, antique shops and boutiques, it’s easy to see why any visitor would gladly leave their heart in San Francisco. Cars line up day after day to drive down Lombard Street, the “crookedest” street in the world, and make the slow creep downhill past charming period homes. Polk Street is the main drag in this neighborhood, where you will find trendy bars, cafes and shops populated with locals, but for one of the most charming rides in the city, grab a cable car heading up and down Hyde Street.
