This a small pub but has a great atmosphere and food. I had a mushroom brie burger that was fabulous. Will definitely be back again.

We followed a path suggested by the tour person at Coit Tower and found ourselves in the vicinity of Grumpy's. Not a lot of places to eat, so we grabbed a table outside. Fast service. Great food. No ambiance or view, but steady stream of customers and we would definitely go back.

Think of Grumpy's as a bar that also serves some good food. The bar atmosphere is front and center and, quite frankly, what gives it personality. It's not fancy. And seems like a hangout for the advertising crowd. But the beer is nice and cold. And the burgers and great tasting and fairly priced.

Ever since it changed from McGovern's (and JC's Saloon before then) this place has morphed into something that may have pretenses of being a dive bar but really is not. That being said, Happy Hour is lively and cheap and the lunch fare is quite good. The burgers are sloppy in a good way (lots of napkins required.) Just don't... More

A good selection of beer in a bar. Make no mistake about it, Grumpy's is a bar, not a high est, overpriced place, but a good neighborhood bar to grab a beer and chat with your friends or whomever else happens to be on the next stool. I found the staff and patrons to be friendly and open, and had... More

Friendly bartender with a decent selection of beers on draft and bottle and bar food. It's a relatively small place and you do have to go to the bar for service which is awkward as it gets more crowded in its small space. It's probably more a beer place than anything. The bartender had no clue about what kind of... More

I went here because I was looking for somewhere to have a burger and watch some football. Maybe it is me but I expect there to be staff if I am not sitting at the bar. I waited for a server and, seeing others going to the bar for service, quit waiting and went somewhere that had servers.

My wife and I came here while on our honeymoon. While planning the trip, I originally wanted to find a place to eat between Chinatown and the Exploratorium, but that soon changed when we had to rearrange our plans due to Alcatraz's limited availability. However, the close proximity of Grumpy's to the Exploratorium allowed for a change in plan for... More

We were walking to downtown and happen to see this pub and stopped for a beer. The name seemed to fit my mood, but quickly changed with the friendly service. We did not eat, but it was very popular with the lunchtime crowd. The food portions were quite large.

Loud old school Pub a few blocks from the Exploratorium. Good draft beer selection. Very spicy chili, but good. Caution smoke flavored. Wife liked the mac n cheese, teen son liked his Russian burger, strange but great meatloaf...sweet. very attentive staff. Music is VERY loud. Burgers are the specialty and a wonderful selection.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
