To quote our discerning teenager "best hot chocolate ever". But there is so much more to discover if you really like quality products. Croissants, tick; chocolate eclair, tick; blueberry cheesecake tick! A "Stella" bakery indeed!

I've got to give them 5 stars. Anyone that can make a good cannoli - read: not just okay - but a truly good cannoli deserves the full 5. I've tried cannolis all over the country, and this place makes some of the best. It was originally recommended to me by an area local, and I've been back several times... More

While San Francisco is well-known for sourdough bread, folks don't realize the number of established bakeries -- Stella has provided folks with the sweet treats since the 1940's. Having served many "who's who" of the San Francisco Bay Area (and probably delivered / shipped elsewhere), the Italian baked goods are a delight to all ages. Known for the sacripantina cake... More

There's hardly any room in there and you may not get a seat. It is, however, a delicious bakery. I stopped by 3x over 4 days so that ought to say something! I particularly enjoyed the cookies, though the cannoli and the sacripantina were great! Not sure about the coffee, but judging by the locals drinking I'm sure it's alright!... More

Tried this pastry place in little Italy and enjoyed all 4 desserts we tried. Apple, wild berry, house special, and tiramisu were all excellent. So far, the best dessert place we found in San Fran.

I stopped Stella with my son and daughter-in-law who both wanted coffee and some cookies for our BART ride. EVERYTHING looked wonderful! I must say the cookies tasted wonderful, but not for the exorbitant price!! If you are an Italian from NY... you will understand.

This is our go-to in North Beach. Excellent cannolis and other delicious desserts. They have a few small tables and coffee if you want to eat in.

We had lunch and continued walking up Columbus Avenue figuring on stopping for dessert. We walked by this place and I could smell the wonders from inside. We went in and had a strawberry shortcake and a caramel cappuccino. We got a set near the window where we watched people go by. Amazing!!! If I lived in SF I would... More

Light, fluffy, airy, hugely bad for you... these are all the superlatives one can use about Stella. Try the Sacrepantina, Cannoli, Tiramisu or any of the traditional Italian biscuits. They're all fresh and fabulous. Coffee is available as well, but this is a pastry shop plain and simple.

Lovely Italian pastry cafe. Tiramisu, Chocolate Fedora, Cream Horn, Napoleon..... Cannoli is a bit sweet for my taste though.

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
