Booked for our last night in the city. Lovely people, we got stuck in traffic due to the rain so we were 15 mins late but they still held our table. The people are so welcoming and will cater to any request. The food is quite expensive, so make sure you really like Italian! Small place but worth it -... More

A fantastic Italian restaurant - you'll need to know what you want and be assertive - but the staff is there is make it a great evening. The quarters are tight, busy and noisy - but the food, vibe and feel is truely New York. The food, appetizers and meal is fresh and high energy.

If you like Italian food, the way Italian food was served in NYC in the 70's, then you will enjoy the place. The tables here are very close to one another and if you are claustrophobic, this is not the place for you. It is dark and crowded. To some that is part of the charm.

On a recent visit to Scalinatella, we were welcomed with open arms. Although we are not "regulars", Vito and Giuseppe treated us like special customers and when in NYC, we intend to be regulars. The food was hot, fresh and delicious. In particular, the linguini with white clam was spot on. Note: The staff had excellent knowledge about the wines.... More

For our last night in New York our hotels concierge suggested Scalinatella when we said we wanted Italian food. I checked it out on Trip Advisor and read several reviews...all pretty spot on. Good food, expensive (but not really surprisingly so) and the continuing theme that service was a bit rude/odd. We seemed to have two waiters during the evening.... More

We couldn't get a booking later than 5:30 p.m., which was good, because it was relatively quiet at that time and seemed to get frantically busy later. The waiter reeled off a long and mostly unintelligible list of specials, so we chose from the ones we had managed to hear. The food was good but the bill was a nasty... More

Highly recommended by friends, but we went late after a show and the place was empty, staff looking like they wished we hadn't come. Stuffy waiter recited the menu a mile a minute with a heavy Italian accent, an out of work actor rehearsing for a role as a Mafia capo? Then we found a loose shoe under the table,... More

The restaurant lies in the basement and looks cosy when you enter. The waiters are quick to try and sell all their specials which arent on the menu, and get a bit annoyed when this is declined. The food was average for an italian restaurant, nothing special which can justify the harsh prices. On a plus side, they're able to... More

I went to Scalinatella looking for a great Pasta Bolognese and was not disappointed. To be clear, this is a very traditional menu restaurant. Tons of pastas, veal Milanese, branzino etc. if that's what you want, this place will not disappoint. They also had a special starter for the night of stuffed zucchini blossoms which was fantastic. Their portions are... More

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
