MICHELIN Guide's Point of View

One of the last-standing, old-time Eastern European spots on the Lower East Side, Katz’s is a true NY institution. It’s crowded, crazy and packed with ...

When your college aged son requests that your first stop for food is Katzs deli on your first full day waking up in New York, you hop on the subway and head down to the deli! The wait on line was only about 15 minutes...(we were there on a Friday around 12:15pm) and once you got inside you could smell all of the deli meat. It was our turn to order and we ordered a pastrami sandwich, a bagel with cream cheese, cream soda and a lemonade! BEFORE they made up the pastrami sandwich, they gave us each a few pieces of pastrami to sample...have mercy the slices were warm and tender! I was full eating the sample! Katz's deli does their sandwiches the old fashioned way...a sample of the meat before making your sandwich. I am so glad we started our day there!More

A must do for fans of “When Harry met Sally”. Delicious deli including corned beef, philly chees steaks, and turkey with chopped liver. Only negative was rye bread was too soft to hold the sandwiches together.

By way of full disclosure, I am a newby when it comes to Katz's. In the late-80s and early-90s I lived in MA and dated a woman who lived in NYC... I traveled to NYC for a weekend once each month and we frequented the...Carnegie Deli... which was near where she lived. In the early-2000s, I / we pivoted to The Stage Deli because it was near Broadway, and by that time my sojourns to New York City revolved almost exclusively around the theatre district. When those delis closed, I again pivoted - this time to Katz's... I guess that was about 5 or 6 years ago (?)... and I'm SO happy that I did. But, it makes me incredibly sad when I come back to New Hampshire because we have nothing that even closely resembles Katz's here, and I know it's going to be another 4-6 months before I return. Sigh. There is nothing in this world like a Katz's reuben... As I watched my cutter prepare my sandwich, two other employees brought out ten freshly cut sides of lean corned beef, dropping one piece at each cutting station. My cutter barely paid attention to the newly-delivered corned beef, as he worked away at the piece in front of him, cutting medium-thick symmetrical slices of beef for my sandwich... creating a stack fit for a king. He then topped my sandwich with a large helping of sauerkraut, covered with two thick slices of melted Swiss cheese. The top slice of rye bread was covered with their special sauce, the sandwich was sliced in half and wrapped. My request for a couple of extra pickles (one sour and one half-sour was granted without hesitation, and my order of fries placed in the bag beside the sandwich and pickles (my guess is the cutter didn't want the hot fries to cause the pickles to wilt). The sandwich (and pickles and fries) lasted two meals... so Wednesday lunch AND dinner were covered in one stop before I checked into my hotel. In my room, I dove into my sandwich with great enthusiasm. It was glorious. The corned beef was perfectly cooked... moist and tender and in ample supply. It is almost impossible to understand JUST HOW GOOD their corned beef is if you haven't tried it before. It is "melt in your mouth" tender... if it was on your plate you would never need to touch your knife - the side of the fork would be just fine. The pickles were fabulous - not to sour - and the fries cooked perfectly, though they could have used some salt. THAT is the complaint I have - no salt on the fries. Big deal! The meal was otherwise tremendous. It's Friday and I'm back in NH now... lamenting the fact I won't be able to get another Katz's reuben until at least December (if I'm able to convince my wife to go to NYC to attend the theatre during the holiday season)... otherwise it may be April before I can partake once again. Katz's reiben is one of the things I look most forward to on the drive to NYC. It is my first stop when I arrive in the city... and sometimes my last stop before I return home. If you love corned beef or reuben sandwiches but haven't been to Katz's, you simply MUST stop by and give them a try... You can thank me later!!More

Well, what can I say? I expected something, yet got a fatty fat meat sandwich (it was huge, these sandwiches really are), shabby interior and a talkative employee. I don’t know how this place still remains iconic in NYC. Save your money, go to some...other place. This deli is much ado about nothing, if I may.More

After 25 years of visiting NYC, I'd never been to Katz's Deli, and not sure why. Lucky I had my vax card with me because they check it at the door. If you don't have it, then no soup for you! After the outdoor line,...then the indoor line, I got shuttled to one of the many bank teller-like windows where a craftsman takes your order and makes it on the spot. If you tip him well at the start he'll likely give you a nice snack of fresh cooked meat while you wait. I went with what they suggest anyone should get on their first visit, the pastrami. I don't have the words to accurately describe how amazing it was, it was that good. Bonus, you can sit at the table from When Harry Met Sally (I'll have what she's having").More

Don’t order an omelet, not the salami omelet anyway, its not tasty and comes with a pile of fries on top - wired. Otherwise it’s a crowded and not very pleasant space and the food is rather expensive for what it is, and very mediocre....One wonders why are they so successful.More

Great Tender meats and old school dining. My family and I have been visiting this family owned business, since I was a kid. Now I share delicious memories with my children. This is one of the best spots to get tender delicious cuts of meat...with steak style French fries. The prices have went up, since I was a kid but worth it. You can request lean pieces or fatty pieces and it’s all done right in front of you.More

This traditional Jewish restaurant is a must visit. I lived close by and when I left the area, I could not leave without a pastrami sandwich. Enough to share with 2 or 3 if you are not hungry. Interior is basic with lots of history....Worth visit also when you need some food after partying in the Lower East Side.More
