Our first visit to Savannah. We ate at Husk last night. The two restaurants are not in the same league, so I really don’t understand the high number of rave reviews for Chive, especially when the prices are similar. Most of what we ate was...“ok” this evening, so if you like the menu and atmosphere, give it a go, but don’t expect great value or refined quality. The waiter kindly suggested Shirley Temples for my children, so we ordered one to start. When it arrived it was a glass of Sprite with grenadine. My daughter thought it was fine. Not what I’d call a Shirley temple - no juice, no cherry, no orange wedge - but whatever, not going to judge a restaurant on this, I just thought it was rather comical. The paper napkins also raised an eyebrow. The bread and pesto olive oil was very nice, and I’m a bread snob having lived two years in Paris. No complaints here. Next came the fried calimari - not bad, but nothing to rave about - just average. Clams next - the clams themselves were nice quality, but the sauce was odd and not particularly enjoyable. Luckily, it was thin and ran off the clams so didn’t ruin them fully. We waited a bit, expecting the dozen fresh oysters we ordered, but they never showed before our mains arrived. The two waiters who brought the mains seemed very perplexed as to why we would then cancel the oysters once the mains had arrived, but they obliged. Nothing terrible about the mains. My husband had the striped sea bass on vegetables (without the red curry sauce, as was his preference). I had the risotto with shrimp. The shrimp in red curry sauce were fine. The “risotto” isn’t traditional risotto. It’s a rice dish that holds its form on the plate under the shrimp… and tastes of cream and cheese. Quite a pleasant flavour, seasoned nicely, so totally edible, but not risotto. We ordered two sides as well - the vegetables and the orzo. Yes, this was a lot of food - we had our two children with us. The orzo was edible, though it had clearly been pre-portioned and sitting under a heat lamp for a while as it was a bit dry on top, and held its form. Quite cheesy flavour. We asked if we could have an additional order of orzo with just butter on it for my son and were told that that would be impossible because the orzo only came prepared this way. Bad sign to me! Not the waiter’s fault. We chose not to have dessert at this venue.
If the prices hadn’t been so high, and the reviews hadn’t been so amazing, I wouldn’t be spending my time writing this review. Just hope this helps to put things into perspective for some.More
