La Fonda was highly recommended, both by locals and other tourists, as the best Mexican food in the area. I went at the end of the lunch hour, and La Fonda did not disappoint. I had the La Fonda Special, with cheese enchiladas, taco, tamale,...More

We traveled from Canada and selected La Fonda based on Trip Advisor reviews. We were not disappointed. The menu is extensive with all the usual Mexican and Tex Mex options; the food was excellent, and the service was efficient and friendly. We sat outside on...More

Took a little detour off the freeway heading from the airport to downtown, and I couldn't be happier I did it. The reviews were right on about this charming restaurant. I sat out on the lovely patio and enjoyed some of the best Mexican food...More

During our visit to San Antonio, we ate at La Fonda, Rosario's and La Gloria. La Fonda was a clear winner by both my wife and I. To begin with, their dining room is nice and comfortable (and clean). The staff is attentive and professional....More

We went to La Fonda for an anniversary. Such a beautiful setting on the patio. My wife had enchiladas and I had steak with enchiladas. Both were exceptional. My wife's margarita was outstanding. Service was attentive and quick. Have the coffee ice cream. It was...More

The food, the service, the ambiance on the back patio were all divine. Hope I can come back again if and when I return to San Antonio. Definitely a local hangout. The sweet potato enchiladas and the quesadilla starter were delicious.

We had a wonderful dinner on patio in December 2016 and had some of the best tex mex I've ever eaten! We ordered two different types of mole (one on a steak and one on chicken enchiladas) and both were outstanding. And the margaritas were...More

Read the reviews and decided to stop by and try the place. The restaurant is quaint and seems homely. The waiter was eager to help and offer selections. The queso fundido seemed bottomless on those deep bowls and the duck meat on the side was...More

Hi, We lived in San Antonio as newly weds in 1966. Since our 50th anniversary is almost here, we are returning to where our marriage began for a week in November. One of our fondest memories was eating Puffy avocado tacos at La Fonda Del Norte. Is it true that they are no longer on the menu? We understand that 50 years of progress means that many things are different. The river is not the dark dangerous place we knew. We are looking forward to seeing the showplace it has become. We are not the young kids we once were!!

Give them a call about the puffy tacos! It is not infrequent that something will not be on a menu, but they make it for you! The current owner John Berry (I think son of the founder), is very good. I also second the... More
