It is definitely a local restaurant. The service is absolutely great. Extremely friendly people. It's a very small restaurant so very long wait. Frankly the food is just OK it's really not that great. I think there's other places that would be worth the time. I would pass.

Some of the BEST Hawaiian food around. Each place has their own specialties. Try the squid luau, pipikaula, tripe stew, lau lau, poke with opihi etc. etc. You get the point. It's ALL ONOLICIOUS (good tasting). Food ordered ala carte (family style). Usually a line to get in. That means the food is good and worth the wait. Easy to... More

Traditional luau food served in old Hawaii family restaurant. Don't be afraid of this run-down building located in a decidedly working class Honolulu neighborhood. Restaurant is is always crowded, hot and noisy, filled with local families enjoying food of old Hawaii. The laulau is full of delicious, fatty pork with a tiny piece of butterfish enveloped in a large amount... More

Love it. The poi; the fish; the pipikaula; wonderful luau stew; nicest people, especially the lady at cash register who can add all the numbers in her head.

This may not be bright and shiny like the boutique Hawaii restaurants, but the food is surprisingly good. The menu looked a bit too exotic for my tastes, but I decided to try my partner's food and pretty much devoured his plate of pork. I would go back again and go for the full on experience. The check-out clerk is... More

We ate here 2 years ago and the meal was bar none for what felt like a truly delicious home style Hawaiian experience.!! Well, sometimes such memories become so amplified after your vacation and over time that, no matter how great your 2nd visit is, it cannot surpass the memories of that very first time. I happily report that it... More

Went to Helena's yesterday for lunch. Lucky for us to arrive before lunchtime so there was a table available. Food was great especially the Kailua pig, pork ribs, beef with watercress and long grain rice chicken. When we left, there was a long queue outside. Parking is a problem but we were in luck to get a spot. Thank God!

First good sign was a long line of obvious locals waiting for their tables. After about a 20-minute late got in and started with the tripe stew, luau squid, short ribs, kalua pig, and lomi. The luau squid was a whole new taste sensation sweet with the coconut milk, as well as the squid. The short ribs were very tasty... More

Ok, I get the whole ribs thing. Ono's doesn't make ribs. But everything that Helena makes, that Ono also makes, Ono's makes it better. Ono's makes better tasting haupia, better laulau, better chicken long rice, better kalua pig. Ono's has fresh poi. I like Helena's. It's really good. I would definitely eat there if Ono's was closed.
