I have visited this little restaurant in the hill above the inland town of Alaro on several occasions. However, on each of the previous visits I only went up the winding mountain road for the thrill of the drive, and also to see the views...from the restaurant car park, which are stunning. On this occasion my wife and I had intended to have lunch at another restaurant, in another part of the island, however we couldn't find it, so we decided that this time we would have a late lunch at Es Verger. That was one of the best decisions we made the entire holiday. The restaurant, I believe is a converted barn, with various wall hangings of old farm tools, and animal head plaques. when we entered the restaurant and asked for a table for 2, we were sat at a table in the downstairs part of the restaurant, with, of all people, the elderly lady owner of the restaurant, who was herself enjoying a meal. for those who don't know, the restaurant is very famous for its slow roasted lamb, which I believe is slow cooked over a wood fire for something akin to 24 hours, and has a little San Miguel added. After reading the menu, I opted to have the entrecote steak, with my wife ordering the lamb. While we waited, we were given a large basket of bread with some garlic mayonnaise, it was very tasty, and a good starter before the main dishes were served. We both had chilled coca cola with the meal, which again went down so well that we both ordered a second. However the best was yet to come. When the waiter brought my steak to the table, I thought someone was playing a joke on me. The steak on my plate was massive. I remember thinking 2 things, firstly, that I would struggle to buy this steak from the butcher for the price I was charged for the whole meal on my plate, and secondly, that i thought it looks like they had shaved the cow, snapped the legs off, cooked it and put it on my plate. I can also tell you that it was as delicious, as it was big, very succulent, and extremely tasty. I also got to try some of my wife's lamb dish, which lived up entirely to its reputation. I would have no hesitation in eating here again, though next time I will have the lamb, it is really special, and just fell off the bone. I did however have to admit defeat with the steak, it was so big that I just couldn't finish it, but I gave it my best shot. We both finished our meals with a piece of cake with ice cream, delicious. I have to say that everything about our dining experience was excellent. we were made very welcome by the staff, who were happy to help in anyway they could. As I said earlier, we had the owner sitting at the end of our table, she, despite her age is still very able, and still cooks the lamb herself. with her grateful permission, I was able to take her photo. The restaurant is very well known, 'world famous' you might say, and I wish to add my accolade to that. This is quite simply a tremendous dining experience, with the views adding that little extra to the occasion. One word of warning though, be careful on the winding road leading up the hill, which is quite narrow, and not in the best condition. Also watch out for the free roaming sheep, which can suddenly appear on the road. However, don't let that deter you from visiting Es Verger, one of the best dining experience we have had in Majorca. totally, 100% recommended. By the way, if you are a fan of Rick Stein, you can watch his visit to the restaurant in his travel programmes on Majorca, where he praises the food at Es Verger. The restaurant is also on the road that leads further up the mountain to castle Alaro.More
