Went for lunch. Pleacent staff, and good beer. The meat in the burger we as a bit raw for my taste and the staff contacted me even before I got to say something. Fixed the meat, and I enjoyed a good burger. Tip for the chef:...use homemade sauce for the burger. Whiskey sauce, BBQ sauce... It will make the burger even a better experience.More
Looking for some good burgers in Europe is often hard, but this place had absolutely awesome burgers as well as some of the friendliest staff I've ever met, particularly considering that we're in France.
Let's say you're an American exploring La Belle Provence, not only to soak in the sunshine and the sea, but also to learn the culture and above all, experience the cuisine. You have tasted every variety of ratatouille imaginable. You have splurged and gorged on...aromatic bouillabaise. You have even broadened your palate and your horizons by ordering pied et paquets. But now, you are getting a little homesick, and you are beginning to crave something from home, something like a burger and fries. Suddenly, you are drawn to step into a McDonalds.
Don't do it ! Go to Zeu Burger instead where you can get great burgers and fries with, as their name implies, a French accent. Their buns are freshly baked every day at a local artisan bakery. They use French beef, which means mostly grass fed, hormone and antibiotic free, and their fries are fait à maison, homemade, not that frozen industrial variety you find in typical fast food establishments.
The husband and I both selected Zeu Bleu Burger, a thick beef patty, cooked through but not dry, carmelized onions, and creamy, mild Bresse blue cheese. Although tempted to pick it up and eat it with our hands, the thickness and juiciness of the burger pursuaded us to do it French-style, with a fork and knife. Delicious.
We had a bit of a wait for our dessert, tarte tatin. There was some sort of undetermined "problem" that arose in the kitchen. These things happen, but once it did arrive, we were happy we waited. It was very generous with the carmelized apples, sitting in a pool of crème anglaise with whipped cream and a sprinkling of crumbled Speculoos. I briefly considered ordering another to go.
When you go, I suggest you go early. The place is small and fills quickly. In order to be able to sit, we had to rearrange the furniture a bit in order to squeeze our legs under the table, and even then, the table rested on top of my thighs. But considering that the both of us had a substantial burger and fries, dessert, half a liter of wine to share, and coffee for just 37€, we were pleased that they had enough room to squeeze us in. We found it a very good value and will be happy to return.
Zeu Burger is located just one block from the train station in Aubagne, and one block from the market plaza. Service is welcoming and friendly, and the proprietor speaks English very well. In addition to the various varieties of beef burgers, among their other offerings are chicken burgers, steak, tartare de boeuf, and salads.More
Are you in South of France around Cassis and fancy a really good burger - for 11€ only? Then you will definitely not regret to make a stop at Zeu Burgers in the sleepy little city of Aubagne.
Stephane, the very friendly owner of this...little vintage bistro (as he calls his cosy and clean place) and his staff delighted us tonight with their perfectly cooked juicy burgers (her with an avocado burger with guacamole, me with the cheddar burger) in fluffy buns (produced in a local bakery just for Zeu), accompanied by crispy coleslaw.
To make things perfect the homemade cheesecake was just yummy - and the whole meal (including beers, coke and coffee) came for only 35€! Maybe I lost my sense of proportion because prices in Zürich (or in Cassis) circle in galactic spheres - but if it wasn't an 8 hour drive, I'd come to Zeu once a week.
PS Stephane, the only thing you could still improve a little is the crispness of your pommes frites. All the rest is top-notch.More
