About
A warm welcome to this 16th century old coaching inn. We have very cosy small rooms where you can have a quite drink or a noisy one if you like. Try our 3 hand pulled beers Tetley cask Timothy Taylors Landlord or Reverend James, this year we are the only pub in Malton to make The Good Beer Guild. The compact smoke room retains its bench seating, boarded ceiling and corner counter, we have a very small bar to serve from you have to see it? The public area has a log fire in winter and yo we be welcomed by all our locals. The rear of the Blue Ball as a patio area for those, for those warm sunny days if we ever get them. We have a good selection on our food menu. Lunch Thursday to Sunday or evenings

After being let down for food in the hotel we was staying in we decided to try and find a pub. Most said it was to late to book a table, but 2 local men recommended this place. Once we found it the place was...so welcoming friendly and cosy. The food was exceptionally good for the price. Would definitely recommend this placeMore

In the past I’ve described the actual bar in the Blue Ball as a central bar but, thinking about it, it would be more accurate to describe it as a central kiosk. To paint the picture - only one person could work behind the bar...at a time, and the area probably measures no more than 5ft x 4ft. It has three openings, one onto the “main” bar, one onto a cosy little snug, and one onto the passageway leading to another wee room. From a practical perspective it is absolutely perfect, but I love it simply because it is unique and charming. But what about the main considerations re the pub? Quite simply the Blue Ball is a fabulous little pub offering friendly service, good beer and a lovely atmosphere. What more could you possibly want? We always come here when we visit Malton and, if you like good pubs, I would encourage you to do the same.More

If the rating system would allow this would be minus5* Booked a table for 7pm on a Tues eve on the recommendation of friends. Travelled from Scarborough but arrived at 3 minutes past. Yes that is 7.03 for a 7pm booking to be told in...no uncertain terms that the kitchen was closed and the chef had gone home. All other diners had arrived early so that was it. The place was not full and the sign outside was still advertising food. There are a number of questions here. What happened to customer service? Why did no one ring us if they thought we where a no show? Having worked in hospitality for many years there is absolutely no way that a kitchen can be closed and completely COVID 19 cleaned in the 3 mins from our booked time to our arrival. Which begs the next question of just how high, or low are their hygiene standards? In these current Covid times when businesses are crying out for customers and income this pub obviously is the exception as they can turn away custom without a 2nd thoughtMore

Stunned & Disgusted.. We booked a table for four of us to dine at 7pm & left our name & contact number, We got there at 7-03 to be told Kitchens now closed !!! Because we’re late, 3 minutes!! Also she said because her other...bookings had turned up early, we asked to see the owner but they had gone home,… What in 3 minutes ,!!! So if we had got there 3 minutes earlier, it would have been OK ?? It would take several minutes to sit down, order a drink Look at the menu & Order. We’re not making this up , It’s the most ridiculous & Stupid attitude …. Anyway each to there own, Human nature never fails to astound me. Really SadMore

I think the reviews speak for themselves. Only one terrible (from 2 years ago), one average and 77 excellent / very good. I discovered The Blue Ball a few years ago when I was looking for somewhere to watch football (Leeds to be precise) and...I was directed here by some fellow Leeds supporters. We live just outside Leeds but we have a holiday home near Malton. I consider myself to be more of a local at The Blue Ball than anywhere in or around my home town. This is mainly due the landlady, Christine, who made us feel welcome from day one. Very quirky inside (there appears to be rooms everywhere). If you want Sunday lunch then this is definitely the place to go. Current choices are beef, lamb or venison. The mid-week menu isn’t massive but what you do get is top quality. A word of warning, if you go here for a meal I would suggest you starve for 24 hours before because The Blue Ball doesn’t do small portions!More

I won't pretend to have come across this pub by accident, we went as a result of the reviews on this site, and how glad we are. It's an interesting very well looked after old fashioned pub that does superb food. The menu is not...that large but caters for most tastes. We had fish and chips and scampi and chips. Served quickly with all we needed and they tasted superb, just make sure you are hungry when you go. Other customers and the lovely landlady make for a very pleasant experience. Coffee isn't bad either. The high spot of Malton.More

From the outside I had my doubts I'm not lying. A lot of places in Malton were closed when we arrived. Its dog friendly and from the folks inside a very local pub. A traditional old fashioned pub with lots of nooks and crannies. Lots...of real ales on offer on draught. The lady who served us was lovely. We ordered steak pie dinner and a ploughmans. The portion sizes are very generous, with homemade chips and all for about £8 each! She gave the plenty of dog water too as it was a very hot day. Overall a very very lovely and pleasant suprise and in a foody place like Malton and so good to see traditional pub grub.More
