There aren't many great restaurants in Savannakhet so this was a wonderful surprise. We had lunch here. Sitting on the river listening to the sound of the water, sipping mango shakes waiting for our lunch, while looking out across to Thailand on the other side of the Mekong. The fish meal we had was yummy and I left the restaurant feeling very full.

The main reason for recommending Savan Lao Deum is its location. The restaurant is built on a pontoon - built partly of driftwood, we were told - floating by the bank of the river and is accessed by steps down from the car park. Sometimes, sitting by the waterside, the wake from a long-tail boat sets the pontoon in motion, reinforcing the sensation that you are on the river. The location offers a view across to the town of Mukdahan on the Thai side of the Mekong River and a superb view of the sunset over the opposite bank. The food is Lao/Thai/Chinese fare, best accompanied by cool Beerlao. Prices are inexpensive and the bill can be paid in Lao Kip, Thai Baht or US Dollars, though the change may come in Lao Kip. There is another dining area in an elevated position at the level of the car park, which appears wheelchair-friendly and may suit those who prefer the more elevated viewpoint.

I believe it is under Thai management. Warning if you suffer from motion sickness don't take a table on the pontoon nearest the river. Food was fine and service OK. 3 of us ate there th other day for about 500 baht.

Really nice, large restaurant along the ricer front. You can sit inside or outside. There are excellent views over the ricer and I think it’d be great in the evening for the sunset. Menu is in Laos but with English translation on lots of the pages, and photos! The large egg fried rice would feed 4 people easily!! We also had the fried chicken with garlic and pepper which was lovely!! Staff were very nice. Reasonably priced especially considering portion size, food quality and beautiful views!! I really liked the music too.

But would have preferred no loud music playing at 6pm. Just let the customers enjoy the tranquility please? Plenty of time for music after dark non? Food was good..chicken wings came with copious fried lemongrass and garlic. Prices same as Thai city restaurants so ok. An experience venue rather than real foodie destination. Service god and fruit platter was fresh and sweet. No cocktails but could quite easily have added Malibu or bacardi to the pineapple smoothie - sadly not proffered by staff. Next night got street food and own beer and enjoyed perfect sunset from a spot on the bank without the bland 90s thai pop soundtrack.

After crossing the bridge at10am,we had just 6 hrs.' to get back across to Thailand. We wanted to make the most of it, We had hired a car and driver as we could not take our car across.Something about not having a big T on the back.Ok for 3000bt he would drive us around all day and show us the sights. Well we saw everything there was to see in 2 hrs. Now what still got 4 hrs. to kill, every one hungry, decided on Savan Lao Deam. Stayed there for 4 hours. What a great place, A raft with bamboo and thatched roof, with the Mekong rushing passed. Great meal of fish and small plates of veg.Beer was cold .We all had a laugh at the toilets, very clean ,but you could see the Mekong at the bottom. We can all recommend this restaurant .Great time for all.

Order the fish platter and all the annoyance from the lao only menu will go away. No waiter spoke English and the menus were different with photos that didn't really match the items next to them... The location was ideal, right on the Mekong. Recommended.

The menu was only in lao, with photos not related in a straightforward way to the items listed (in lao) and even the menus themselves were not all the same. BUT, the location was great right on the Mekong and if you ordered the fish platter you were in for a very positive surprise. 75.000 kip for enough for 3-4 people. One big grilled fish with lots of sides. I recommend it, but would suggest to the manager to print a menu in English or have at least one of his staff speak English.

We didn't actually eat here, we only stopped by for a couple of drinks, but the service was excellent and the riverside setting was most peaceful with some stunning hand carved wooden decor.

The restaurant area sits on the edge of the lake and that adds ambiance and, of course, photo opportunities. The waitress was friendly and desperate to take a selfie with our daughter! The food was really good value and served reasonably promptly. We had a couple of local dishes and some chips (fries). The chips were well cooked and had a dusting of curry powder of some kind: you don't get that everywhere. Downside? Dogs! They wandered in and weren't really a bother but I don't like dogs in a restaurant. They can fight over food and that's both unpleasant and potentially dangerous. Really good value for money, though, without doubt.

This restaurant which is built on the water is not cheap like the stalls on the bank of the river, but well worth it. The service is excellent and considered one of the better restaurants in town. the restaurant had quite a few customers for lunch and I was the only foreigner. The tables around me were filled with groups of what appeared to be civil servants and wealthy local families. The food was very good, but more expensive than similar restaurants in Thailand and quite bit more expensive than the food stall on the nearby river bank. I would go back again though because it was a very pleasant place to eat and spend some time.

My family and I had a nice lunch at this restaurant while visiting Savan. The food was quite good and very reasonably priced. They were extremely understanding with our 8 month old daughter. We watched a thunderstorm roll in while enjoying the views of Thailand from across the Mekong. Might not be the fanciest place, but certainly was the best food we ate while in Savan. The stir fried pork and deep fried basil was as good as any we have eaten in SE Asia and the mushroom soup (fresh, in season mushrooms) was great.
