Very good food and menu choice was very creative. All of our party had a great meal and the price was what you would expect . Service was very friendly but acutely slow. We had a few children and had to hurry things along as they were getting fractious. Would certainly recommend and go back😁

We celebrated a family birthday earlier in the month and as usual the food was fantastic and the service attentive and friendly. I had the bubble and squeak "again" but then it's the best in the County ! Looking for an excuse to visit again soon

Excellent place to take the family for Sunday lunch. The menu had a wide selection considering that Sunday lunch's are normally just roasts, but here there were plenty of other options. Had the guinea fowl which had an amazing red wine jus and the portion size was just right. Service was great as well, very cheerful friendly waitress and the... More

With the fire at Alford, life and so many other matters - it has been some considerable time since we returned. Why did we leave it so long. While I can never rate their Sunday lunch I am always impressed by their a la carte menu. It was back to the double bubble and squeak and it was worth it.

Excellent restaurant in a country pub set in a rural setting near Berkhamsted. Efficient online booking system with menus also available online including allergy menus. They get very busy so book well in advance for peak times such as weekends, it had limited availability for a Wednesday night when I booked 2 weeks ahead. Friendly efficient staff in a comfortable... Six of us went out to dinner here and had the most enjoyable evening, in a great atmosphere and with delicious food. We all left agreeing that it would have been hard to improve on the evening. The staff were friendly, the service efficient and the choice on the menu excellent. The bubble and squeak starter, one of their specialities,... More

Picture a Visit Britain postcard with tagline and you often think it does not really exist, but here, tucked away in the Hertfordshire countryside,it does with bells on! Yes, it is a classic English country pub with super menu containing twists & turns on traditional pub fair; the outside transforms into a corner of Kew Gardens when the hanging plants of... More

We had advised the restaurant in advance that my husband is allergic to garlic, so the staff had printed out a special menu for him, omitting those dishes he couldn't eat. We have never come across such a thing before - wonderful! The food came quickly and was delicious. Fresh ingredients, perfectly seasoned, and well cooked. All the flavours could... More

My wife and I enjoyed an excellent dinner here. I was our first visit since it closed after the fire. I think my last review a few years ago was not very good - but nothing to complain about this time.

Description
A warm and welcoming country dining pub with open fire and muddy boots and dog friendly. People often describe the Alford as a gastro-pub, but we're not really comfortable with that tag. The term sounds too restauranty and cheffy. We've always wanted the Alford to be a great pub, where you just happen to be able to get great food. So tables in the dining room are available to book, but there's also the bar for drinkers with tables available on a first come, first served basis. The seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using local produce wherever possible. Hanging baskets and window boxes adorn the terrace and provide an alfresco dining area. Alongside is the village green and historic Ashridge Estate is right on our doorstep. Ramblers, dog walkers, bluebell admirers, mushroom foragers and cyclists regularly emerge from the surrounding countryside ready to combine their activity with a refreshing stop at the Alford Arms.
