Savona to Paris

We are 5 persons traveling to Paris from Savona port (after a cruise) by train at the end of November. Being first timers in those regions, we don't know which routes would be the best ones (in terms of comfort, travel time and cost). What would you suggest? Thank you!

There are two possible routes.

You can take an Italian train west to Ventimiglia, a local French train from there to Nice, and then a fast TGV to Paris. Or you could take an Italian train to Milan Centrale (often with a change of train in Genoa), then transfer by taxi or metro to Milan Porta Garibaldi and take a French TGV from there.

For the best prices, book direct with the train operator as far ahead as possible. Tickets go on sale 3 months before travel in France, 4 months in Italy, and the cheapest tickets often sell out quickly. The discounted prices keep going up as the travel date gets closer.

You can get Italian train times and costs, and make bookings, from www.trenitalia.com using the Italian versions of city names.

You can get French train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at en.voyages-sncf.com/en but use Antarctic as the "Ticket collection country" in the first screen if you find you are being transferred to RailEurope, which usually has higher prices and does not list all the trains. For notes on online booking, see www.nickbooth.id.au/Tips/FrenchTrain.htm

There is no point in trying to book the Ventimiglia-Nice trains in advance over the Internet. These local trains have no seat reservations(so tickets cannot sell out) and no discounts.

if you can leave Savona at 07.45, you can reach Paris with only the one change of train at Ventimiglia, as you then use a direct train to Paris from Ventimiglia (which avoids the usual change of train in Nice on this route).

If using the Milan-Paris trains, it is both faster and cheaper not to board these in Milan, but instead to board them in Turin. Take a direct train from Savona to Torino Porta Nuova (these are Regional trains with no reserved seats and no advance reductions, so you can buy tickets in Savona). Then take the Turin metro (underground/subway train) three stops (€1.50) to Torino Porta Susa for the Paris train. On the SNCF website, Torino Porta Susa is simply Turin.

OK thank you guys, much appreciated! Our travel agent suggested taking the TGV from Genoa to Paris.. does that make any sense?

It doesn't make any sense.

TGVs are French trains. The TGVs you want run on one route from Ventimiglia (once a day) or Nice (about six times a day), and on the other route from Milan and Turin about three times a day.

To get to them you have to take Italian trains, which are not TGVs.
