Pacific NW roadtrip help

I'm a Portlander (OR). I have a friend coming out this summer July 25 to Aug 5th for a road trip (loves outdoors and hiking and food)and I was wondering if this itinerary makes sense? Keep in mind its peak season and lots of hotels etc are fully booked:

Day 1 : Wed pick up friend from PDX airport and drive to Columbia River Gorge hotel and spa. Stop along the way and hike Beacon Rock for views over the CRG.

Day 2: CRG, Hood River, hike and wineries.

Day3: Drive to Mt Rainier get there around 6pm. Overnight at Fireplace Lodging in Ashford.

Day 4 and 5 Mt Rainier National Park. (skyline trail etc)

Day 6: Drove to Olympic NP. Overnight at Seacliff Gardens in Port angeles

Day 7 and 8: Port Angeles and select day trips to Olympic NP, The Hoh, La Push and Port Townsend

Day 9/10/11: Drive to Portland OR and spend the 3 nights in the city. Food-carts, Rose Garden, etc.

I don't want it to be too rushed and thought we could do Northern Cascades NP, the OR coast and Crater Lake for another time. Any input? I've forgotten what tourists like to see in Portland OR!!!!!

Port Angeles does not make an ideal day trip for the Hoh IMO (about 2.5 hours one way); you could visit Hurricane Ridge and Lake Crescent with much less driving.

The Hoh and ocean beaches are too far away to be comfortable day trips from PA. Not impossible, but rushed and you cheat yourself out of the opportunity to really take in the grandeur of the west side of the Peninsula.

Hi

I recommend posting on the Olympic NP forum. Share your draft itinerary and what is most important to you. Some folks want to hike. Some just want to ride in the car & see a few good viewpoints.

Forks would be a good base for the Hoh and La Push.

Some issues with Olympic NP are that not only is accommodation quite limited, particularly on the west side of the peninsula, but ongoing roadworks at Lake Crescent make travel between PA and places like Forks or La Push even slower than usual, which is already quite slow.

While I hope this doesn't complicate things too much, I wonder if a non-National Park itinerary might make more sense given your limited time. For example, what if you kept going east from Hood River out to Joseph and the Wallowas? The scenery is national park-worthy, there's terrific hiking and sightseeing, and it's likely to be a bit less crowded than Mt. Rainier and Olympic NPs. If you went at the beginning of the dates you'd be in Joseph for its big rodeo and festival, Chief Joseph Days - http://www.chiefjosephdays.com/rodeo/

With ten days you could include a swing past Mt. St. Helens on the way out to Cape Disappointment and the coast, which might make for a couple of great days.

We come out to Portland periodically to visit family. Some of my favorite spots to visit in Portland are the Japanese Garden and the rose test gardens; the Zoo; the Pearl District. And of course there's the big market under the bridge on Saturdays and Voodoo Doughnuts.

Forks is a better base but doing Olympic you really need to move each night.
