Six day round trip from St Louis - route suggestions?

I'll be visiting the States in late October and I have a 6-7 day window when I'm planning to hire a car and explore. I'll be starting and ending in St Louis MO. I'm interested in maybe seeing some autumn colour, interesting small towns, a bit of history ... that kind of thing. Friendly bars, some local music, and good food would be nice ... I won't be geared up for major hiking but some national park walks would also be interesting. I'm a 60 year old woman (not that that means much, except I'll not want to go clubbing EVERY night!) and I'll be travelling alone.

I don't want to drive huge distances in a day - 4 hours would be pretty much maximum and not every day ... maybe follow the Mississippi ... any suggestions for routes would be great. Thanks!

Hi,

You could consider Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Blue Ridge Parkway, Mammoth Cave National Park, and Nashville.

The Ozarks are south of St. Louis and also in Arkansas and there are many beautiful area to explore.

You could check out the quaint river town of Ste. Genevieve MO

Reelfoot Lake (formed as the result of an earthquake) is a unique place worth seeking out in the very top of Tennessee. Giant City State Park in Illinois is another unique spot.

Paducah KY is a pleasant river town with many art-related sights. Land between the Lakes is nearby and has a variety of activities.

Following the Mississippi is a good idea.

See:

https://experiencemississippiriver.com/

for more information. If Mark Twain's writings mean anything to you, visit Hannibal, MO - it could be tacky, but in my opinion it isn't.

You can also follow part of Route 66, either westwards into Arkansas or eastwards into Illinois. The Arkansas section has more interesting places, but if you have any interest in Abraham Lincoln Springfield IL & Lincoln's New Salem are worth considering.

St Louis itself is a pleasant city - the Gateway Arch is impressive!

Lots and lots of options.....

here's one we have done (albeit in two separate trips but you can make a nice loop in 7 days).

1) St Louis to Hannibel - Mark Twain, Missisippi Country

https://www.visithannibal.com/

Drive: 116 miles

2) Hannibel to Springfield, Illinois

Drive: 102 miles

President Abraham Lincoln Library, state capitol and other museums.

Small town environment.

3) A bit longer drive day to Bardstown (Bourbon Country, history, carriage tour, etc

363 miles -

https://www.visitbardstown.com/

https://kybourbontrail.com/

4) Bourbon Trail - continue to stay in Bardstown (there are tours, drive yourself, etc.)B

5) Bardstown to Mammoth Caves National Park and do a cave tour

https://www.nps.gov/maca/index.htm

If want to do a boat cave tour there is one you can do after your visit to Mammoth Caves at

Lost River Cave

https://lostrivercave.org/

both are very different cave tours.

Stay in Bowling Green.

Bardstown to Mammoth Caves - 1 hour

Mammoth Caves to Bowling Green -1/2 hour

Possibly for the evening

6) Bowling Green to Nashville - 1 hour drive

Country western music, Country Music Hall of Fame, Opryland, etc.

7) Drive back to St. Louis

300 miles, 5 hours drive.

Day 1 to Paducah

Dat 2 to Nashville

Day 3 to Memphis

Day 4 to ozarks

Day 5 back to St. Louis

Nashville and Memphis are music towns. St. Louis has some music history too in blues and jazz. Part of thing here is to go out in the night to go to bars and see some live music.

Fall colors could be missed in some of these areas.

Such a great central location!!!

A few already mentioned Springfield, Illinois and the Lincoln Library there.

Elsewhere in Missouri, there is the Harry S Truman presidential library.

Nashville is lots of fun to visit. Music spills out everywhere. They even have live music at the airport there!

Sticking to the MS river southward towards Memphis gives you some great views, history, music and food.

Here is a good website-

https://experiencemississippiriver.com/

Click on each state for suggestions and also look at itineraries section. It has one for a 5 day trip south including Arkansas, Tennessee , Mississippi and Louisiana.
