Malaria and dengue on Togian

Hi all

We are thinking about going to Togian Islands but I got put off by reading all stories of people getting malaria and dengue over there. What is your experience? Have you taken anitmalarian pills or just used repellents for moschitos?

Thanks

Agnieszka

Agspags, hi

Saying there is no malaria in Indonesia is NOT true, saying they specifically you will be a subject to malaria/ dengue transmitting mosquito bite will not be true either, everyone has a chance. The best prevention is a good mosquito repellent with strong DEET component ( no less than 25%). Apply it day and night every time you go out on the open part of you body excluding face.

Local brand recommended:

I'll add to Schonefeld's sound advice. If you decide to take any malaria prevention products you would be best to do some research as some of these products can have unpleasant side effects. Although research is currently under way, presently there is nothing on the market that you can take to protect you from dengue. Therefore keeping up with repellent is very important.

Thanks, one more question, what about dengue? Is there a risk on Bali and Java, or Sulawesi only ? I found some forums on that topic but they are quite old from 2012... Basically do I need to be careful and use repallents on Bali & Java as well?

Everywhere. And do not hesitate to apply several times a day.

I was infected on Lembongan, near Bali. But yeah, it’s widespread. And getting worse as time goes on.

Some background info within my link here or feel free to read the whole story.

Make sure you have decent health coverage in places where odd, atypical tropical illnesses are prevalent. Could save you some cash.
