Talkeetna or Denali Princess Lodge?

Planning a trip to Alaska this summer. After a four day stay at the Grand Adventure Lodge on the Kenia River.we are planning to take a train ride up to either the Talkeetna or the Danali Princess Lodge. Would like to spend a few days at one of those two lodges. Could someone please tell us their opinion as to which one would be best? We live in Montana so do see wildlife often. We are mainly looking for some beautiful hiking trails and some nice fly fishing streams. A small village with local culture would also be a plus. Thank you!

My husband and I stayed at both lodges last August. I believe Talkeetna was nicer. It has much more of an "Alaskan feel" to it. There are many, many things to see and do from this area, most centered of course around sightseeing and wildlife seeking. There were many people off salmon fishing. Talkeetna is a little town with a lot of character!

Denali seemed to be a stopping point for people going into Denali National Park. There is not much to see around the lodge there, although the lodge itself is quite nice. Hope this helps.

talkeetna is probably better, a little touristy but more to do in the area without national park restrictions. You can see Mt McKinley right from town

Denali is so overrun with tourists anymore, I would definintley stay in Talkeetna. Don't forget to stop in Palmer/Wasilla on your way up to Talkeetna and see the Iditarod Museum, Musk Ox Farm, Reindeer Farm, Trappers Museum, and of course, Hatcher Pass which is just incredible!

You can see McKinley from the deck of the Talkeetna Lodge. It is spectacular in Aug., if it is clear enough to see it. Aug. is typically our rainy month and the mountain is frequently weathered in. The lodge itself is very nice and clean. Talkeetna is an interesting town with a few restaurants and activities to do. Denali is pretty much commercialized nowadays.

PEOConnie,

Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is very beautiful, great restaurants and a view out of this world(on clear days)!! The only downfall is that the rooms are expensive. There are many alternatives to the lodge and still have all of the opportunities the lodge can provide.Have a look under the Hotels section (on this website of course!!)under Talkeetna, and there are three categories to choose from, hotels, B&B's or cabins. I live in Talkeetna and can tell you the fishing up the Talkeetna River at many of the small creeks are great for fly fishing for trout and salmon. The lodge is surrounded by a lot of trails which are marked. Have a look at the Talkeetna Chamber of Commerce new website which is full of information for fishing guides or drop off service and also outfits that can lead you on some wonderful backcountry hiking tours or provide you with a map to go on your own.As far as Denali Princess, it is in the heart of "the strip" of hotels that are in Denali area. Not much to do after the trip into the park....If looking for small village with local culture Talkeetna is definately the place!!

This post is old, but thought you may still have the same email. Are you a PEO? Curious. My husband and I are going to stay at Talkeetna or McKinley lodge - from the posts, think we'll try Talkeetna - did you, and how was it?
