Memorial Day or July 4th?

Hi,

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 kids of 8 and 11 years old) are in the early planning stage of next summer's trip to Zion and surrounding area. Since we could only do it during either Memorial or July 4th, which one do you think we may have better experience? We don't mind crowds. My main concern is the weather. Is July 4th significant hotter than Memorial day?

We prefer July 4th since it fits our work schedule better, but if the weather is really uncomfortable during that time, I could change it to Memorial day.

Thanks for your help.

There is no appreciable or predictable difference at all between the two - either crowds or weather, Pick the one most convenient for you.

Have fun.

It isn't the weather that you should be too concerned with. It's the huge crowds that you will deal with for either holiday period. Since you are planning a year in advance, you should book a hotel in the town of Springdale so you can leave your car at your hotel, use the shuttle system and not deal with the parking issue at the visitor center every day. The way to manage the heat and the crowds is to get in the park early each day (by 8:30 or so) Take a mid day break at your hotel or in Springdale and then go back in to the park in the evening.

It’s a good thing that you don’t mind crowds. You’ll be coping with the busiest days of the year, regardless of the dates you choose. Make it tolerable by booking the most convenient lodging in Springdale. Do it soon. Options will disappear soon.

Thank you so much for the advice. Then I think we will pick July 4th if the weather is not that much of difference. We went to Yellowstone and Great Teton last year during July 4th. I guess the crowds in Zion are similar to that. If so, we are definitely ok with it. We will go to Yosemite this July 4th. We try to bring kids to a different national park each summer. Since we always book the trip several months in advance, so far we have been able to book lodges inside the park in both Yellowstone and Yosemite. Based on the suggestion here, we will book the hotels in Springdale this time instead of inside the park.

The 4th of July at Zion will be nothing like the 4th of July at Yellowstone. At Yellowstone, you aren't required to use a shuttle to access the park. Zion has a mandatory free shuttle from the visitor center into the main canyon. You will wait in lines to get on that shuttle, You'll wait in lines to board the shuttle throughout the park. There will be crowds on the trails. Zion is more compact than Yellowstone with one way in and one way out of the main canyon.

You can beat the crowds, somewhat, if you are up very early and at the visitor center to take one of the first shuttles. The shuttle starts to run at 6 AM. You will also want to stay in the town of Springdale which is literally at the park entrance. That way you can leave your car at your hotel and take the Springdale town shuttle to connect with the Zion shuttle at the visitor center. Stay outside of Springdale and you will need to be at the visitor center before 8 AM if you have any hope of getting a parking spot there. Miss out on the free parking at the VC and you'll pay $22 to park in Springdale all day.
