10 - 12 day trip through Northern AZ and Southern UT

We are planning a trip through the area - will leave from Oro Valley, AZ and spend the first 2 nights in Sedona and drive up to Page with two nights there. My thought was to do the following route:

Page - Lake Powell boat tour, Antelope Canyon X, drive to Paria in Grand Escalante, Horseshoe Bend Overlook

Leave Page and drive the southern route 89 to Marble Canyon, Vermillion Cliffs Nat. Monument, Jacob Lake and if time allow drive up to Canyon Point but did not know if it is doable in a car then back to Kanab or to Zion Nat Park for the night.

Spend a second night in Zion Nat Park or Springdale. (Should we instead do 2 nights in Zion or Springdale (or at the East Entrance to the Park)

Leave Zion and head to Cedar Breaks National Monument and then to Bryce Canyon for the night

Leave Bryce and go to Capitol Reef - spend night in Capitol Reef area

Leave Capitol Reef and head to Goblin State Park and on to Moab and spend two nights in that area and spend one day at Arches National Park and stop by Dead Horse and another day at Canyonlands Nat Park.

Leave Canyonlands and head to Monument Valley do a tour and spend the night in the area and then head to Canyon de Chelle and then to Winslow for a stop and then to Kohl's Ranch for two nights.

Leave Kohl's Ranch and head home to Oro Valley, AZ

Do you think this is allowing enough time to really see the area, we could add a day or two if needed somewhere. We will do a few short walks/hikes but nothing over moderate hiking for us. Would like to see as much as possible by driving through and stopping at overlooks except for the best places recommended then hiking 2 - 3 miles on easy to moderate trails would be fine.

Do you have any recommendations to this trip. We plan to leave Oro Valley and spend the first two night in Sedona on September 13/14 and then Page 15/16 but have not booked anything beyond that yet. Any advice/recommendations are appreciated. We are okay with doing the route in reverse order as long as it is leaving from page since unfortunately I already have that booked and it is nonrefundable.

Question - can you drive your personal vehicle from the East to the South Entrance of Zion or does the shuttle take you from one entrance to the other so we get to see it all without driving around.

Thanks in advance to any input. N Hinds

You need a full day for Zion. So stay two nights in Springdale Utah and not one night in Kanab and a night at Springdale. The road system in Zion is like a "Y". Part of the Y is the scenic drive in to the main canyon. The other part of the Y is highway 9. You can drive your car from the south entrance at Springdale out thru the east entrance on highway 9. It's a state highway and is open 24/7. To access the main Zion canyon by the scenic drive, you will be required to use the shuttle from the visitor center..

Since you are going to Bryce, IMO, going to Cedar Breaks is kind of redundant.

Book a hotel in the town of Torrey Utah for your Capitol Reef visit. We like Austin's Chuckwagon Lodge. Broken Spur Inn and Red Sands Hotel are also recommended.

You really need three nights in Moab to give you two full days - one for Arches and one for Canyolands. The day you leave Moab to go to Monument Valley and on Winslow will be a very full day. You will not have time to go to Canyonlands on that day. Arches is one park where you will have to get out of the car and do some walking/hiking. Many of the Arches can't be seen from the road.

If you haven't booked hotel rooms for the Utah portion of this trip. You may have it a real challenge. Mid September is still prime tourist season.

Same basic comments as Connie - Springdale and Moab are the areas you are short on time. You need to stay west of Zion - the mandatory shuttle to see the main canyon is at the west entrance - from the east entrance, it would take about an hour just to get to the shuttle.

Just a tip about booking a hotel in Torrey. We really like Austin's Chuckwagon. We stayed there last weekend and will be there again in July for a mini family reunion and then again in August and October for several nights. I would suggest that you call Austin's directly if online reservations show no availability. Austin's has three original hotel rooms that don't show up on their website. They are smaller than the lodge rooms, but very clean, with a good queen bed in each and will have everything you need for a one night stay except a hair dryer, fridge and microwave. Those rooms are $67 plus tax. If you have a cooler and need things kept cold overnight, ask at the front desk if you can put some things in their fridge overnight. We have found the staff at Austin's very accommodating and helpful. They went the extra mile for us last weekend in a special situation.

Directly across the street from Austin's is Torrey Trading Post. They have camping cabins (two double beds) with shared bath for $50, a studio cabin with kitchenette and a larger cabin. It came highly recommended by one of the desk clerks at Austin's. She said it was one of the 3 places in Torrey she would recommend for an overnight stay. (She didn't tell me what the other one was.) We have two cabins booked there for our July trip.

Good advice already. Zions needs at least 2 nights. Choose Springdale. Commuting from east of Zion takes a lot of time. Moab deserves 3-4 nights. Canyon de Chelly needs a guided tour in the canyon. You need at least one night there at Chinle.

Stay the next night at La Posada in Winslow.

Thanks for the added info on Canyon de Chelly, was wondering if we should spend the night there. Will do it, don't want to feel rushed.
