beach transport and best beach to go to?

We will be in Bermuda next month on a cruise and we are trying to avoid a cruise excursion to the beach because it's way too short. We have small kids, so want an umbrella and food options! What is the best beach to go to? And what is the best way to get to the beach? Cab? What can we expect to spend on cabs (I keep hearing they are expensive!)? THANK YOU for any insight.

Given your preferences and priorities....simply walk down the gangway of your ship at the King's/Heritage Wharf cruise ship pier to the 'T' and take a Horseshoe Bay Beach Shuttle from the queue of mini-vans, vans and mini-buses that make the express run between the pier and the sand at Horseshoe Bay Beach.--fare: $7 per person, one-way...OR...step across the roadway to the Taxi queue and take a mini-van type taxi (will carry up-to-7 passengers) to the same Horseshoe Bay Beach (fare: approx. $55-$60 ) ** NO ** cruise line tour or excursion required...it's THAT simple.

Horseshoe Bay Beach has the RUM BUM'S BEACH BAR-- https://rumbumbeachbar.com/ --concessionaire there that rents chaise, umbrellas, etc. serves basic '..beach food..' and a beach bar....which may suit your extended family's purposes.

If the beach area near the entrance seems too crowded ...simply walk farther along toward the less-crowded, eastern end of the Horseshoe Bay 'crescent'...or better yet, 'round the large Peel Rock formation at the far eastern end of the beach to several smaller, much less trafficked coves and beaches. The '..catch..' is that there are thousands of cruise ship passengers who want the same thing as you (easy access to a beautiful beach, aquamarine water, azure sky, full bathroom, changing rooms, beach bar & restaurant, chaise lounges & umbrellas) and several hundred of them will be heading to the same place, pretty much at the same time. No plan are purphekt....'..We have met the enemy and he is us..' (Walt Kelly)

YES...taxi fares do tend to be EXPENSIVE in Bermuda.....BUT....If I recall correctly, you will be traveling with a group of extended family ("..6 adults and 3 kids (Youngest being 5).."). Regular, mini-van type, licensed, metered taxis in Bermuda can carry up to seven(7) passengers. Though taxi fares will certainly be more costly than Bermuda's excellent public bus system...on at least SOME occasions (not everyone in the group will be traveling to the same place, at the same time), for SOME destinations, the cost of a taxi fare for several of your group together may NOT be quite as expensive as you might think (comparatively so) and considerable MORE convenient. Everything's a trade-off....in this instance....cost vs.convenience.

Earlier is always better than later, depending on the number of cruise ships berthed at King's/Heritage Wharf out at Dockyard on any given day...... but....you can evidently reserve your chaises and umbrellas in advance by e-mailing them at--

info@rumbumbeachbar.com

RUM BUM'S BEACH BAR--

https://rumbumbeachbar.com/rental-items/

You can check the 2018 BERMUDA CRUISE SHIP SCHEDULE-- marineandports.bm/Documents/Shipping_schedul… --to determine which/how many cruise ships will be berthed at Dockyard on any given day during your proposed visit

RUM BUM'S is the ONLY concessionaire there at Horseshoe Bay...whether that's a 'recommendation' or not remains to be seen.

Hi Rebecks99,

The Horseshoe Bay Beach will be a great option for what you are looking for. One option that you can use to reach the Horseshoe Bay is public transportation via the number 7 bus route and then walking down the main hill gotobermuda.com/article/getting-around-bermu… There is also a mini bus that offers a shuttle service between the cruise ship terminal and the beach for $7 per person. Once you arrive at the beach you will be able to rent umbrellas and chairs from the Rum Bum Beach Bar & Restaurant www.rumbumbeachbar.com as well as buy food and snacks. Adjacent to the Horseshoe Bay is the Jobson's Cove gotobermuda.com/profile/…about which is a great calm spot to take a walk with the smaller kids.

Also located inside the Royal Naval Dockyard is the Snorkel Park Beach which has a shallow beach for kids to go swimming and a restaurant to order food. The Snorkel Park Beach has a $5 admission fee but is free for children under 12 years old www.snorkelparkbeach.com/

This is what the western-end (end nearest the beach entrance and Rum Bum's) looks like at around noon/early afternoon (note shadows) on a good '..beach day..'-- https://tinyurl.com/yarfjbcl --and when there are a couple of large cruise ships berthed at Dockyard-- https://tinyurl.com/y7ymgx5x

So KDSail would you suggest going to horseshoe bay on a Sunday in July since there is only 1 cruise ship docked? Or just avoid it?

SURE....if it's too crowded for you at the western/entrance end....simply move farther east (to your left as you face the ocean) along Horseshoe Bay Beach (past the life guard station)..Or better yet....walk the length of Horseshoe Bay,...'round the large Peel Rock formation at the far end....to the several smaller coves and beaches 100-200 yards beyond---WAFER ROCKS BEACH as an excellent alternative-- https://tinyurl.com/yaqa4a83 .... https://tinyurl.com/yaclxabj
