Leaving Thursday-Questions!

Hi - We are leaving Thursday for a week at Grand Cayman. A few questions I was hoping you could help me with -

We are staying at Plantana - are we within walking distance to a grocery store and restaurants? We were planning to rent a car for a few days but not for the whole week.

What grocery stores can we order from online to have the groceries at our condo when we arrive?

Are there any beaches with fun (not dangerous) waves for us to swim at?

And are there any places we can go with our kids (15, 10) to see reggae music, limbo, and other traditional caribbean island fun things or are these only at nightclubs for adults only?

Thanks in advance for all of your advice!

Plantana is a very good location and not far from Foster's grocery at the Strand Shopping Center, but you are not going to want to walk that distance with many groceries. You can go to caymanshoppers.com and for a fee they will do your grocery shopping and deliver to your condo.

Stingers at Comfort Suites (southern SMB...about 2 miles from Plantana) has a dinner/luau show on Wednesday evenings. Cost approx $25/person (plus gratuity). Marriott (near Comfort Suites) has a Buckeneer Feast on Friday evenings for about the same price. Both are favorites with families.

SMB generally calm, but when last there (March/April) there were several days with big waves and many (kids the ages of yours) enjoyed frolicing and body surfing in them.

You are going to have a wonderful time!

Check out the Royal Palm Resort for live Reggae. Its pretty close to Plantana. Unless something changed from the last few years, they have bands Thursday-Saturday. Its outdoors (but covered), right off the beach with a dance floor and bar. Pretty fun.

The only time Ive ever seen waves big enough to body board or body surf at SMB is when a big storm is around. Otherwise it is pretty tame.

Have a great time, wish my trip wasnt 6 months away :-)

Thank you both for the info! I didn't know if maybe there was a beach on the other side of the island that we could drive to that has waves. Also, do you know if there are many restaurants within walking distance of Plantana?

We can't wait to go!!

The island is mostly surrounded by reefs, so little wave action at the beach. Where there is no reef, the shore is ironshore not sand.

To answer your question about restaurants in walking distance, as long as you dont think a walk of about 1 mile is too bad you should be able to find quite a few places. For something closer, the Ritz and Westin both have really nice restaurants.

There are a number of restaurants within walking distance from Plantana. Edouardo's is our favorite in that area; also Copper Falls and Luca. For more casual, less expensive Eat's across from the WEstin. If there on a Sunday, I highly recommend the Westin Sunday Brunch. If you do the Westin brunch it will be a "one meal day!"
