Turk & Caicos vs. Barbados

Well, here I am trying to decide if we should go back again to T&C 2011 or try Barbados. We love T&C but I feel I'd like to check out another island. Somehow I got a gut feeling that we will be disappointed with the beaches at Barbados and after being spoiled with the crystal clear water and silky white sand of T&C no other island will do.

Have I been spoiled with T&C? Absolutely.

Maybe some can help me out with this.

Thankyou

In my opinion, Barbados does not even come close to T&C. We went once and never even thought for a second of returning. The beaches were nothing to speak of. The only beach that ever came close to Grace Bay was Pink Sands Beach, Harbour Island. That is one Island we do want to return to.

I was facing this same question last year when my girlfriend and I had to cancel our Rivera Maya trip due to the swine flu and we ended up choosing Barbados. Well, to make a long story short, we wish we had chose Turks and Caicos. We haven't been to T&C yet, but from everything I see and read, it just seems like the calm, relaxing, serene, tropical paradise that we are searching for. Don't get me wrong... The beaches were gorgeous and fun in Barbados, but that was it! Too many drug pushers and hustlers always nagging us for something. We really did not want to leave the resort because we didn't feel too safe. Barbados did have some decent night life although and we took a nice catamaran snorkel cruise, but other than that, Barbados just seemed a little rough for us. I would rather go back to Aruba than go to Barbados again. So this is why we are headed to T&C next year! Have a great time whatever you choose!

Totally agree with JerseyGirl and Rob. My husband and I spent 2 wks in Barbados and would never go back. Even when we are on a cruise, we don't bother to get off the ship!

Rob, the highlight of our Barbados trip was also the catamaran trip. Long way to go for a boat ride. LOL

The beaches on the southwest of Barbados are fantastically beautiful. Lots of waves, tho....not gentle like in the T & C. I am busy trying to decide which I want to go back to right now! Lots more to do in Barbados. Barbados is a fully fledged country, just like Jamaica, whereas all the T & C has is beaches. Hard decision!

Agreed JerseyGirl. The catamaran trip and swimming with the turtles was the best part of the trip. Too bad ever day couldn't have been like that. lol

Barabados has lots more to do from shopping to seeing planation houses, the wildlife reserve where monkeys come right up to you, to the Atlantic coast which is rugged and gorgeous and often compared to Scotland. There are plenty of historical sights to see in the capital city of Bridgetown and restaurants along the west coast, in Bridgetown and in St. Lawrence Gap area. We traveled to Barbados the year before we were marrried, then honeymooned there in '04. We always feel safe and love renting a car and the public bus sytem is cheap and reliable too. We too loved the catamaran trip and snorkeling with the turtles. We have small children and will take them to Barbados when they are school aged to experience the scenery, the monkeys, the turtles, all that Barbados has to offer. The beaches on the west coast are narrow but the water is calm and lovely.

What T&C has over Barbados is certainly the beaches. We visited before our daughter was born and then brought her twice, once with the grandparents. We love that there is nothing to do but read, lounge, play in the sand, have cocktails, eat and repeat. Our three trips have been 10 days each b/c you can never get too much relaxation. We hope to make our fourth trip next summer with both kids and the grandparents for 2 weeks. Incidentally we stay at The Sands and love everything about it. These two islands are both dear to us as we love to get out and about in a rental car and eat where we like and go where we like. We have felt equally safe here as compared to say our trips to St. Lucia or Jamaica where we felt less so. Happy decision making.

Ever considered Aruba? Check out my review of the hotel we stayed at there. To me, Aruba has it all. Beautiful long streches of white sand beaches with nice warm calm water, excellent resturants, water sports, casinos, nightlife, & shopping (real shopping with stuff you might actually recognize and wear at home.) The people were extremely friendly and we felt very safe and rode the super efficient bus system everywhere. It also seemed like the people of Aruba seemed a little bit better off. Yes, it's a little bit Americanized but that didn't bother us. Overall, a really fun destination and one of the best beach vacations we ever took!

Rob, Been to Aruba once and it was nice, but just not what we were looking for. We found it with Provo. In a way, I wish we weren't addicted to Provo. We have tried other Islands during the 15 years that we have been going to T&C. We plant ourselves on the beach and immediately know we should have stayed with original plan, which was Provo.

We're afraid to try another island now ourselves. It would be terrible to feel disappointed. For now T&C it is!
