Bolongo bay resort

Looking to go here in February with another couple, we have never been, usually go to Jamaica but looking for something different. Do we need to rent a car to get there, or do they have car rental at the resort? Would like to explore off the resort, How far from the airport to the resort? Is there any kind of night life? Just over all atmosphere of Bolongo? Looks like a fun place.. Thanks for your help!!

Bolongo is a lot of fun! The staff is great there. I would recommend getting a car. Taxis are easy to come by at Bolongo, but taxis are also expensive and a rental car would offer you more freedom and may save you some money. You're not far from Red Hook, where there are some good restaurants and bars. Iggie's is a beach bar at Bolongo, they often have live music at night. They usually have Carnival night every Weds. too.

To the best of my knowledge there is no car rental agency with a presence at Bolongo but it's very easy to rent a car which will be ready at or very close to the airport upon your arrival. There are literally thousands of threads on the subject and discussions of the various agencies. If you use the search engine and change the selection parameter to "by date" you'll find a ton of information to help with your decision. The drive from the airport to Bolongo is about 20 minutes.

The accommodations at Bolongo are simple but adequate. The beach is OK and a little rocky while there is very little to see snorkeling. From Bolongo you're about a 15 minute drive to the best beaches on St Thomas (Coki, Sapphire, Smith Bay Park and Secret Harbour) which are on the East end of the island as well as a similar distance to the Red Hook ferry terminal from where you can take a day trip to St John and to the BVIs (passports required for the latter).

Hope that helps for a start. Happy planning!

Somebody said they saw a manta ray at Bolongo not too long ago, and Bolongo is the closest resort to Turtle Cove, so their catamaran excursion is more turtle time vs more sailing time.

I like Bolongo over some of the other resorts, because there are very few stairs. It's not upscale or lavish, but it's very convenient especially if you rent a vehicle.

For the most bang for your $ rent a vehicle, esp w/four persons it will save you $ and no waiting for taxi . We ate at Iggies this winter and they had very good live music that night.
