First visit, don't know anything about this area

Hi all,

We (late 40's couple) are thinking about a holiday next year in Mexico. We don't know anything about Mexico, except that my husband thinks that it's dangerous to leave the resort. We live in Gran Canaria which is one of the Canary Islands (part of Spain) off the west side of Africa. We like hot weather. The main reason for this holiday is that the weather has been terrible this last winter and we want some heat. Okay that's the background.

First question; when to go? I had read that July was hot but then found out that it's the rainy season, so is April a better month? We like the heat.

Second question; we are not used to big cities and crowds, would Playacar suit us?

Last question (for the moment) I only know of the Rui chain of hotels, is there another hotel chain/group I should look at?

Thanks all

Cs

Ps: I'll be back........sorry, watched the last terminator flim last night

The Riviera Maya region is hot and humid from May through October. Rainy season does mean intermittent tropical showers but seldom constant.

Playacar is a good resort location as it offers quite a few different hotel choices and is within walking distance of Playa del Carmen town center. If you are not used to big resort crowds however you may want to look at smaller boutique hotels along the Tulum coastline.

As anywhere common sense and safety go hand in hand. Millions do visitors come to these shores every year and have great vacations. We suggest that you do some research beforehand and get to know some of your options. A reputable online agency should be able to help you make the right choices when it comes to things to do in the area.

Thank you, so it looks like April and Playacar are the best time and place. Any ideas on hotel groups? We always book direct with the airline and hotel, online agencies just make it more expensive.

Hotel choices will come down to your budget and if you want a family resort or adult only. If you want a quiet relaxing spot or more lively. The Riu hotels are a mid range hotel budget. You do get a good bang for your buck with them. The Palace level of the Riu hotels is there top ones. Choose your hotel carefully of course. For instance Riu Tequila isn't on the beach but across the street so make sure you research well to get the things you want. The Royal Hideway is in Playacar and is adult only. It is very quiet and has a beautiful beach.

There are many others and many wonderful areas as well.
