Mexico - is it secluded?

Hi,

I've been to riviera maya and was pretty secluded. I'm thinking of booking cancun as was under the impression you can go out but the more I read about it, I'm beginning to think it's just all inclusive hotels and you can't really leave the hotel.

Please can somebody confirm this and recommend any other places?

We are in our thirties, fit and like walking, shopping malls, cinema, hikes etc. So think somewhere a bit built up would be good but good hotel also with gym, sauna, restaurants etc. Best of both worlds I suppose. Thank you so much xx

I think it really depends on where you stay in relation to towns. Playa del Carmen is a sizable town, and if you stay at a resort near town, you can easily wander around. And of course regardless of where you stay, you can always take a taxi into town.

Thank you so much.

Do you know of any hotels in playa del carmen that are close to the town centre? I've been looking but can't see any x

I just rececntly stayed at Ocean Rivera Paradise, just a few minutes outside Play el Carmen. Cost us 18.00 U.S. one way by taxi. Not to bad at all.

I don't have any personal experience - PDC isn't really my scene - but I used Google Maps to look at hotels in the area and found a bunch.

www.cancunmap.com/riviera-maya-hotels.html - shows all Riviera Maya hotels

http://www.cancunmap.com/cancun-hotels.html - shows all Cancun hotels

Both Cancun and Playa del Carmen have a plethora of hotels, both all inclusive and non, boutique hotels and other accommodations as well as bars, restaurants, shops, clubs, etc.

"I've been to riviera maya and was pretty secluded." I must be missing something but cannot imagine feeling the Riviera Maya is secluded. One of the most over built resort areas I have seen.

There are a ton of resorts that are in PDC.

They aren't all all inclusive.

Playacar Palace, Royal, Panama Jack are your more resort style all inclusives that are basically downtown.

The Tui, as was Thomson, riviera maya hotel is very secluded, my brother in law went a few years back. We're staying in playacar in the riu palace mexico. There are a few other riu's that we can use and Playa Del Carmen is in walking distance.
