What is the best resort for snorkeling right off the beach?

How about all inclusive?

Boy that is a really great question, that has very few answers. Most of the resorts along the Hotel Zone in Cancun are facing the Caribbean Sea. Under even normal conditions, the waves are big and snorkeling would not only be hard but not safe. The water is too "active" with a lot of undertow. From the Point or Punta Cancun the water is almost calm and you can snorkel with very little problems. The first resort on the Point is Dreams Cancun, followed by the RIU's etc. Hotels after Km 8 and below are on that side. Hotels before or on km8 have a lot of wave action and snorkeling is not what you would do. As a joke, you could snorkel in the pool. That would be safe and you can see everything.

There might be things in the pool that you don't want to see - especially around the swim up bar!

Hello Astrid, we have stayed at the Catalonia Hotel in Puerto Aventuras 2 years ago and we loved it so much we are returning in 2 weeks time. The snorkeling off the beach at this resort is very good as there is a small reef , also a small man made island in a lagoon where you can see small fish hiding in the rocks. My husband even seen small barracuda!

We think the all inclusive option at this resort is excellent and great value for money.

In Cancun I would have to say Club Med. It is right on the reef and has excellent snorkeling from shore. There are other resorts at the southern end of the hotel zone which are walkable down the beach to the reef - we stay at the Westin Regina/Club Regina.

The honest answer for the serious snorkeler or free diver is that there is no snorkeling from a Resort Hotel in the Hotel Zone in Cancun that is worthy of mention. Sure, there's some minor spots near Punta Cancun and on a good day one may spot some fish and marine life just off the shores of various Hotels but for serious enthusiasts, the pickings are rather slim.

Perhaps, one exception would be, just south of the Westin Resort and Club Med off Punta Nizuc where the reef comes closer to the shore lines.

Keep in mind, for good snorkeling, in most cases, with quantity of marine life and coral, you'll need reefs and "not" sandy beach bottoms devoid of marine fauna and coral populations. If you just want to throw on the gear and have a bit of fun in the sun without extra charge, from the beach of the resort, that's easily done, just don't expect tropical marine aspect you've seen on TV, pictures or elsewhere.

However, there is quality snorkeling, just off shore near Isla Mujeres, El Garrafon (at Isla) and points further south, from Cancun including Akumal, Isla Cozumel(great snorkeling), Xcaret, Xel Ha etc.

I agree with den&holly - Club Med is just off the reef and I think it has the best snorkeling.

Go to Isla and snorkel. We did it through Aqua Adventures-Donna is fantastic! We really enjoyed her and the snorkeling was fantastic-we saw such a variety of fish. Isla is wonderful-next trip we are staying there for at least a few days of the trip. We snorkled, then explored the island all day in a golf cart.

Quite a few people were snorkeling off the beach at the Riu Caribe in September. The equipment is free and most of the fish seemed to be around the dock area.

Akumal Beach Resort in Akumal is probably the best. But the ambiance is definitely different than Cancun. Go to locogringo dot com to check it out.
