Driving from New Orleans to Akumal, Mexico

We plan to drive to Akumal early 2016. We built a home there and want to bring a vehicle and some belongings there. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best routes to take and the best places to overnight. We have become very concerned about safety after all the things we hear on the news. We are aware that the news tries to over sensationalize everything for ratings, but would like to hear from people familiar with things from a real perspective.

Even in the most dangerous parts of Mexico the chances of you being involved in anything unsavory are very, very small (as a driver assing through) but it is often recommended to avoid driving through Tamaulipas state which lies on the shortest route from N.O. to Akumal. So if you are worried about safety head a bit further west to the Laredo crossing and then drive down to Monterrey (which you bypass) and then all the way down the 57 until you hit the Arco Norte (about 90 km north of Mexico City), loop around to Puebla then Cordoba, Villahermosa, etc. (The route is obvious once you get to Puebla.)

I suggest crossing the border as early as you can to avoid lines. Where to stop depends on how fast you drive (not so much the speed you go as how often you stop for breaks) but Matehuala seems a popular spot for a first night in Mexico. After that you can just wing it - depends a lot on whether you actually want to "see" things on the way down or just want to get there as soon as you can.

Agree with Steve. I can't imagine that the 85/40/57 toll route from Laredo would in the end be significantly longer time-wise than dealing with traffic and topes that you'd encounter on another route. And absolutely safe. Las Palmas in Matehuala is a good hotel with secure parking and a more than adequate restaurant. There's a couple in Saltillo, the former American Business Inn with secure parking being one. The easiest crossing is at Colombia bridge just to the north of Laredo. But if you spend the night in Laredo, it wouldn't be as convenient to double back and cross there. Try to avoid spending the night between San Antonio and Laredo as the hotel rates are just stupid due to the oil drilling.
