Ferry crossing to Vancouver Island

Hi

My husband gets sea sick. I would love to come over on the ferry but wondering if the seas are rough and if the ferry is small. From what I'm reading the 3hr trip might be a nightmare for him if he is sea sick.

thanks

susan

Hi Susan ~

Where on Vancouver Island are you thinking of going? And when are you going to do this. Maybe.

The ferry across Georgia Strait from the terminal near Vancouver (Horseshoe Bay) to Nanaimo (Departure Bay) takes 1.5 hours one way as does the ferry across the Strait from Vancouver (Tsawwassen) to Victoria (Swartz Bay).

Georgia Strait is protected water. The ferries on these runs are big, about 300-400 cars. They chug along fairly smoothly. Sometimes, in the spring and fall, there are winds and the ferries shiver and shake a bit. When the winds are high enough, BC Ferries will cancel the sailings until the storm is over. But the ferries do not pitch or roll.

He is not going to be seasick. The plane delivering him rocks more.

I'd like to point out that in Mufti's picture above, the ferry is the big white ship and not the red zodiac! :) This is a pretty good video of what to expect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExJ6z4dQTlQ

Another indication the big white ship is the one lies in the ~350 cars on board. :-))

Nice video, Gelli. That's a great example of a summer sail.

It's one hour thirty to thirty-five minutes not three hours.

It's the largest ferry you're probably ever going to be on... In short he won't get seasick. When the weather is extreme the boat may rock, when it's extremely bad the sailings are cancelled and you stay on the mainland.

or on the Island if you happen to be on that side (-: only got to do that once in March and even after the storm was over (about 4 hrs) I do not remember a rough ride between Swartz Bay to Tsawassen.

There may be wind-induced waves but this won't effect the ferry much. There won't be much - if any - in the way of swells which would pitch/roll the ferry more. The most likely is slow rolling of the ferry as it turns.

"It's the largest ferry you're probably ever going to be on..."

Unless they travel Ireland to the UK or France aboard ferries that carry 2,000 passengers and 1500 cars.
