Do I need to get canadian dollars?

This is probably a silly question, but do vendors in Niagara Falls (on the Canadian side) by any chance accept the American Dollar? We're planning on using our credit card at restaurants and what not to get the best exchange rate, but I'm not sure if we need to have some Canadian Dollars on hand for small things, snacks, etc.

US Dollars are accepted everywhere by everyone.

You'll get about 3 cents exchange on the dollar.

You will get exchange only on the bills, not on the coins, as we use US coins interchangeably here with our own. So if you buy a dollar coffee with a bill you get the 3 cents. If you use 4 quarters, you won't get any exchange at all. And like it says above, your change you do get, will come back in Canadian currency.

Most places do take US dollars, especially in a border town like Niagara Falls, but it really does simplify matters considerably to use Canadian currency.

It used to be the case that the exchange rate tended to be very unfavorable if you used US cash...not sure if that still applies now that the currencies are so close to par.

If you have a US ATM card that's part of a network like Cirrus or PLUS or NYCE, you'll be able to use most Canadian ATMs. You will most likely get charged fees by both the Canadian bank and your own bank, plus an exchange fee. So if you're only going to Canada for a couple hours and only need $20 or something, it may not be worth it. But if you're going to be there a day or more, I'd recommend getting some Canadian cash from an ATM. It just makes things easier not having to deal with the exchange rate during every transaction and worrying about whether the rate you're getting is fair and so on.

Actually, American dollars can be used almost anywhere here, even far from the border. You will always see a sign posted near the cash register stating the exchange rate you are getting. But let's face it, the difference is now about 2 cents between the two dollars, so almost at par. It's hardly worth the effort to go to the trouble of getting Canadian money. And lets face it, we aren't offended by Americans spending their dollars here. It would depend on the length of your holiday whether you need to buy Canadian dollars or not. Whatever you chose, you will take a hit. Currency conversion dealers are in the business to make money, not provide a friendly service.

Exchanging money is not a hassle in NF. The casinos will do it for you, or use an exchange shop or a bank.

if your credit card company charges an exchange fee, and most do i think, then for a large purchase such as a hotel room, you could pay in CD.

Any minute now the Canadian dollar will be equal to the US dollar. About 3 % yesterday. Just pay attention to the posted rate at hotels, stores and restaurants. They are notorious for giving less than the going rate- and now that would mean getting LESS than a dollar for your US dollar, so it may benefit you to exchange just a bit of cash to Canadian for cheap incidentals purchases--a coffee, burger, t-shirt,etc.

There is actually a 2% swing in the exchange rate that you hear about on the news. With the Canadian dollar now at about 97¢US, it means that to buy US with CDN, it will cost 5¢ on the dollar, and to buy CDN with US you will get 1¢ on the dollar. Only banks and casinos will even give that. Most businesses will treat it as equal.

Yep fallsdude, the 2% didn't matter back in the days of 40 or 50%. Now its really noticeable. For Americans like me, its like prices are 40% more now. However, my wife and I will be up this winter anyway. The poor exchange may keep some away, but not us.
