We have a forced overnight in AKL due to plane schedules. Looking for the cheapest way to get from the airport to the downtown/Britomart area. I think we need a HOP card?

How much do we need to make the round trip from the airport?

Only Auckland Transport systems require the HOP card.

SkyDrive bus will let you buy a ticket on board with a card and it's $17.00 per trip. Or you could book online before you come over.

If using the absolute cheapest service is important to you, the Airport Link to Puhinui station, followed by a train to Britomart will be the cheapest. A Hop card costs $10, and the fare each way is less than $5. If you are coming to Auckland before 31 January 2023, it will be even cheaper due to the current half price fares. You can read about airport services and where to buy a Hop card here.

I generally use this way of getting into the city when I visit Auckland. the only caveat is to check the journey planner for you specific arrival and departure dates, just in case there's work on the tracks and rail replacement buses.

Yes definitely looking for the cheapest transport. Annoyingly, the Ibis that is walkable from the airport is expensive the night in Feb we need it. So there isn't much difference between the yellow bus that serves airport hotels and using the HOP card.

There are places to stay near the airport that either have their own free shuttle or are on the 38 bus route, which might prove a cheaper option than the IBIS. Expedia is pretty good at identifying them.

Motels near the airport, are located along Kirkbride Road, and Massey Road. Several motels provide guest shuttles. Look into this option before you consider going into the CBD for overnight accommodation.

The new Skydrive airport shuttle to Hobson Street is convenient, with its half-hourly daytime timetable. Some modest hotels along the HobsonStreet ridge; including the Hobson Hotel.

i did look at the Kirkbride Road hotels. But we have a 23 hour layover and they seem to kick you out at 10:00, our flight to RAR is around 15:30. At least if we are in the city, we can walk around or go shopping or something. There doesn't seem to be much in that airport area within walking distance. The maths basically work out to el-cheapo room in a hostel downtown plus 2 x bus passes is cheaper than airport hotel with free shuttle. The Ibis seems to give late check out until 12:00 and we are members of Accor program, there is a shopping centre across the street so at least things to do and it is walking distance with our small backpacks.
