Gatwick to London Eye.

We're stopping at the Gatwick Travelodge in July and we're thinking of visiting the London Eye. Would this be practical on a Sunday evening, and any information on how to get there and back would be much appreciated. I haven't been to London for years, but I'm assuming it would be easier on public transport. Thanks in advance for any help.

Train. Take the FCC train towards Bedford. Get off at London Bridge. Stay on same platform, take any train towards Charing Cross. Get off at Waterloo East. Five minute walk to the Eye. About forty minutes.

Simplest to buy "FCC travelcard" which covers your journey to/from Waterloo East, plus anywhere else in .london that you decide to visit on same day.

Thanks for that, that's a big help. Just one more thing. We'd be coming back to Gatwick at about 10 pm, would that be a problem with the trains?

No, not normally - trains run beyond midnight. However, Sundays are often engineering works, so check before you travel in case of any works when you visit.

You can take train toward Victoria and change at Clapham Junction toward Waterloo. From there you can get to Eye on foot for 10 minutes or so.

Alan,

On what day/date are you planning to do this (so we can check for engineering works)?

The easiest route by far is that outlined by rcspeirs in #1. Take the First Capital Connect train to London Bridge, get off, and wait at the SAME platform for a Charing Cross train. It will be the next train, in about 3-5 minutes. No changing of platform required. Waterloo East is the through-platform annex of Waterloo, so it's a 2-3 minute walk to Waterloo and then the 5-10 minute walk to the Eye (more like 5).

Also, the (off peak) FCC travelcard at £13 gives you a same day return from Gatwick to London and all public transport within London for the day. If you were to take the Southern train to Clapham Junction or Victoria, it would cost you £15.20 for the same features.

The only thing to note is that, for your return to Gatwick you must use a FCC train outside the London travel zones, that is the train to Gatwick. For simplicity that means heading back to Gatwick on the FCC train from one of its stations - either St. Pancras, Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars or London Bridge. But, if you do end up at Victoria, you can still take a train towards from there, but you will have to change at East Croydon (the only out of central London stop) to an FCC. That's much easier than it sounds.

Assuming there are no engineering works, then the FCC trains will be running at 10pm (they actually run close to a 24 hour service to Gatwick).
