Based at Holyhead but looking for day trips out of Holyhead

Need some suggestions on places I can see in Wales that I can train to or bus and return to Holyhead at night. I will be there for 3 days catching a flight out of Dublin to return home on the 4th day. I was thinking of making Holyhead my base, not really wanting to lug a suitcase around. I could pack a backpack for an overnight stay somewhere in North Wales for a night though. Any help would be appreciated. Will be in Holyhead June 23-26

Holyhead is well past it’s sell by date and there are much better bases. Are you committed to Holyhead? I’d aim at somewhere like Conwy or Llandudno; from either it’s a simple train ride onto Holyhead at the end where - presumably- you are catching a ferry? (There are also plenty of flights from Manchester or Liverpool)

Dont stay in Holyhead. PMQ says past its sell by date.

I'm not so polite, its a dump. Get off the boat on to the train, its in the same building, and go somewhere nice along the coast. Anywhere.

Yet another vote for anywhere except Holyhead.Conwy and Llandudno have already been mentioned. Or go down the Conwy Valley to Betws y Coed by the railway from Llandudno Junction. Of consider Llanberis if you want to climb Snowdon. Lots of choice and all much better for scenery, facilities and location than Holyhead

Staying in Holyhead, when you could stay somewhere like Conwy, would be crazy crazy crazy!

I hate to slag places off, as clearly people live there and I'm sure they are happy to do so, but if I was a tourist I wouldn't choose to stay there either.

Listen to the advice above. Use Holyhead as a port, nothing more.

Hi Donittasweeney

Welcome to the forum

I take it that you are catching the ferry from Holyhead to Dublin and a plane back to the US from there

You could fly to Dublin from Liverpool or Manchester

But I take it that you woukd like to spend a few days in North Wales which is great to hear

By basing yourself in Holyhead means that each day you will be travelling either around the Isle of Anglesey or off the Island to go to places such as Conwy or Betws y Coed

Are you committed to staying in Holyhead ?

If so then , whilst it is a working town it’s not the disaster some woukd have you believe

Trearddur Bay is close to Holyhead and is well worth a day there either on the beach or walking the headlands and South Stack Lighthouse

Beaumaris is another great place on Anglesey.

It has a castle , an old gaol, nice cafes , great views on to Snowdonia and you can take boat trips along the Menai Straits to Puffin Island.

I echo the advice already given to base yourself in say Llandudno or Conwy perhaps

Somewhere on the main train line to make your journey into Holyhead that much easier

Please be aware that there are two railway stations in Llandudno

Llandudno is close to the town centre and is a branch line off the main line

You can use this line to travel up to Betws y Coed for example

Llandudno Junction is on the main line and is actually closer to Conwy than Llandudno

Conwy is a request stop for certain trains so you will have to tell the guard in advance if you want to get off at Conwy

Use www.nationalrail.co.uk

To plan rail journeys

And https://www.traveline.cymru

for public transport

Whoops cut and pasted some sentences before posting and inserted one in wrong place

Should read “ you can use this line ( from Llandudno Junction ) to Betws y Coed.

And just to even things up

I have had a few nice trips to Holyhead , country park there out by the breakwater , a small museum, and a bistro, admittedly it was only for a couple of hours before heading to Trearddur Bay.

But I enjoyed the walk around the harbour

When travelling to Dublin I suggest purchasing a SailRail ticket as this is cheaper than separate train and ferry tickets. This can be purchased online (e.g. Arriva Trains Wales site) or at any staffed railway station. It includes the rail journey from say Llandudno or Conwy to Holyhead and then the ferry to Dublin. You can travel with either Stena Line or Irish Ferries. The time of sailing needs to be selected when booking.

There are also rail and bus passes for North Wales.

anglesey.gov.uk/Journals/x/w/b/advertroverss…

Conwy and Anglesey councils produce excellent public transport guides and a copy can be picked up at tourist offices as well as at rail station booking offices.

South Stack Lighthouse a few miles from Holyhead is well worth a visit as is the Ucheldre Centre and Maritime Museum in town. From the railway station use the Celtic Gateway pedestrian bridge at the top of platform 2 to access the town's main street. I have always found the people friendly and helpful.

Very helpful information! I am doing a study at the University of Ireland and have 3 extra days until flying home from Dublin back to New York. I have been in Dublin for 3 weeks and ready to explore Wales. Ferry ticket already purchased. I would rather not have to lug my suitcase so needed a base. Do you know of anywhere that I can store luggage for a couple days?
