Car rental or car hire?

There will be 8 of us traveling with golf bags and playing courses within an hour and a half drive. Should we rent a car or use. Car service? We will be there the last week of August.

One car will not be a lot of use to 8 people with golf bags, you would need a minimum of two. Agree with Chesterbuff that car hire and car rental are th same thing, so if you are asking about hiring a minibus with driver you will have to cost out the difference in pricing and whether you are prepared to pay it.

As said above no- one can answer that question for you. It will come down to how you judge the cost versus the convenience, ie no designated driver, no navigation issues vs renting two cars. It may even be cheaper to have a driver as even four people with luggage and clubs won't fit in a sedan or UK size station wagon, so at least one of your rental vehicle would have to be a large van style vehicle. Arnold Clark are a good rental company for vehicles such as Mercedes Vitos, which are available with automatic transmission,

If you are going to be based in St Andrews you could get in touch with companies such as GandS cabs or Club Cars for quotes for a van with driver. I know G and S have a large enough van for 8 people travelling together.

Top range option is going for a luxury mini coach with driver, which many golf groups of 8 do. St Andrews Executive Travel, amongst others, offer this option.

But, and this is a big but, if you are travelling this month, rather than August 2015, you've left it a bit late to make the arrangements.

Your choice! Depending on who still has availability to assist you, of course!

Thank you for your note. We will either hire a taxi service or rent a car.

That could work out very expensive. As gogolfing mentioned Arnold Clark has a Mercedes Vito for £650 per week from EDI

A couple of years ago I hired a Mercedes Vito for a golf trip. It could carry 4 of us with luggage and golf bags, and all 8 of us with just golf bags, but would probably not be big enough for 8 golfers with luggage and travel bags. I rented through Celtic Legend, who act as brokers for Arnold Clark, and felt like I got a rather good rate.

Note on that page the suggestion to hire one large vehicle, and one smaller one.
