Thank you and we have decided to take the car.
With only a day, you'll need to decide what to see. Duart Castle is obviously a given, and it's open from 10.30am to 5pm, so first of all you have a choice about whether to do it at the start or end of your day.
If you turn left on leaving the ferry, you head down the long single track road drive to Fionnphort for the ferry to Iona, which is a magical, tranquil place to spend a few hours. See the Abbey and nunnery, walk up to the north end for amazing beaches, or devote three hours of your day to a trip out to see Staffa. Alternatively, you could divert on the way to or from Fionnphort to head down to Lochbuie with its stone circle and Moy Castle.
If you turn right on leaving the ferry, you can do a loop. Head from Salen over to Ulva Ferry, then north round the coast past Eas Fors Waterfall to stunning Calgary Bay. Maybe enjoy the woodland walk before heading on via Dervaig over to Tobermory, which is picture-postcard perfect with lovely little shops selling local crafts as well as the Distillery, Aquarium and small museum. On the way out of Tobermory call in at Aros Park (or even just the lookout tower just off the main road), and then head down towards Salen (look out for seals that are always on the rocks by the old fishing boats) and finally back to Craignure.
But, unfortunately, with one day you need to choose between South to Iona, or North to Tobermory.
