Nantes 2023

We will be travelling from La Rochelle area to Nantes for a rugby match in September 2023. The match is at 21.00 in the evening so planning on staying in the city that night. We will have an additional 6 days in the area. Would love some recommendations of where to stay (ie Nantes or surrounding area) before heading to Paris.

We will be reliant on public transport and love all things cultural/historic as well as places of interest and beautiful scenery.

Many thanks

Nantes being a great transport hub for the area, it would make a good base for touring around. Do you have a nightly budget in euros to better suggest you. But in general, an hotel between the castle and the Place Graslin in the historic center and/or close to the tram line would probably be ideal for you.

In Nantes itself beside the château. You also have the cathedral, the passage Pommeraye and the historic center. Many museums. The machines de l'île. Check out what exposition is held in the LU building plus the view of the city from the Tower is nice.

As for day trips, east you have access to the Loire Valley with Angers (the castle and the tapestry of the apocalypse) and Saumur being easily accessible. North of Nantes, you have Rennes and Chateaubriant.

Closer to Nantes, you have Clisson to the south.

Closer to the ocean to the west along the train line from Nantes to Le Croisic you will find : St Nazaire, Pornichet, La Baule, Le Pouliguen, Batz sur Mer and Le Croisic.

You could also consider Vannes as a nice day trip :

Clisson (medieval center and castle), St Nazaire ( shipyards, sea front and walking path from st Nazaire to St Marc), Batz sur Mer and le Croisic... All theese towns worth the visit and are well connected by direct trains TER. Also Pornic, a charming harbour, south of Loire. Angers (castle and historic center), is also at 40 minutes from Nantes.

On the lines Nantes Angers and Nantes le Croisic it's either trains TER or TGV, and the TGV are a little motre expensive than the trains TER.

And there is a ticket named "forfait multi" giving the possibility from one to five persons to travel during 2 days on all the trains of the region "Pays de loire". One day it's 30 euros, and two days 45. With this ticket it's possible to go to Angers or Saumur the firts day, and to the sea side (Pornic, le Croisic) the second day. https://www.ter.sncf.com/pays-de-la-loire/tarifs-cartes/petits-prix/forfait-multi

Thank you both so much for all this information. Looks like we will easily fill our six days in the area based in Nantes, if anything we will be spoiled for choice
