Paris to Lyon

We would like to visit Lyon by train, is it better to book train in advance or can we just rock up and purchase on the day? What are the pros and cons of this approach?

Is old city easily reached from the station in Lyon by walking?

Accomodation suggestions appreciated.

Thanks Jenny

You need to buy those tickets 3 months in advance for the cheapest prices at trainline.eu. You can learn what to see and do in Lyon by researching its tourist office website.

We booked ahead. There are two main stations in Lyon. From presqu'il it's a 20 min walk. From the part dieu (tgv) station it is a bit longer walk or take the tram

Thank you. Did you book direct with SNCF? Do they accept international credit cards. I am from Australia?

How did you receive the tickets?

Sorry for all the questions as I have never booked train tickets online! Yes an oldie dinosaur!

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, at www.sncf.com/en/passengers or www.trainline.eu

All credit cards accepted, and you get an e-ticket.

I used www.trainline.eu a few weeks ago and it was very easy. Using my credit card was easy and they e-mail your tickets as a pdf. I printed them out and also saved them on the hard drive of my small laptop in case I need to refer to them at a time I do not have wifi. Can do the same on your phone. You can also select and reserve your seats without trouble on this website.
